To all whom it may concern:

Be it known. that I, J OHN DYSON HEARD, citizen of the United States, residing at New Holland, in the county of Hall and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Plow Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved attachment for that class of plows, or rather for that class of plow-stocks, which consist simply of a bifurcated stock or standard adjustably connected with a beam and which are well known by the name of Georgia plow-stock.

My invention has for its object to provide a device capable of being-conveniently attached to the plow-foot for the attachment of various blades and implements to be used in connection withsaid attaching means. The latter may be briefly described as embodying in its construc-. tion a U-shaped clip or culf having perforations for the reception of the various connecting-bolts and a pair of washers of peculiar construction which are-adapted especially to. in combination with the said clip or be used cuff. I

My invention further consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts tending to produce an article of the class'described-which shall possess superior-advantages in point of simplicity, 'durability, and general efiiciency, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed outin the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the clip or cufl and the washers used in connection with the same and constituting-the gist of my invention. Fig.

-2 is a perspective view showing my improved cuif and washer and a pair of wings or blades connected therewith, constituting what is known as the wing-plow. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the lower end of the plowstock provided with a root-cutter, a finger,-

and a laterally-extending wing connected therewith by my improved attaching means. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing my improved cuff and a harrow attachment connected therewith. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the inner end of the harrow attachment detached.

My improved clip or cufl may be described as a casting approximately U-shaped in cross section or consisting of a rear-plate 1 and two side walls 2 2, disposed at right angles thereto and extending forwardly therefrom. The rear plate 1 is provided with a plurality of perforations 3, of which in the accompanying drawings two have been shown. These perforations are for the passage of the heel-bolt by means of which'the device is connected with the plow-stock, and a plurality of these perforations is provided in order to provide for the vertical adjustment of the clip or cuif with relation to the plow-stock. Each of the side walls 2 is likewise provided with two perforations 4 4:, which are countersunk on their inner sides, as shown at 5, for the reception .of flat-headed connecting-bolts 6, the outer ends of which are provided with nuts 7. The

specific construction just described is essential to my invention inasmuch as in operationthe v cuff or clip embraces the plow-stock, agamst the rear side of which the rear plate 1 of said clip abuts, while the side walls 2 2 should fit closely against the outer sides of said plowstock. The heads of the bolts 6, being coun tersunk in the inner sides of the wall 2, will and tight adjustment to-be made.

each of whichconsists of a strap of metal having one end, 9, doubled, upon itself for about one-half the length thereof. {Tlie doubled portion of said washer has a perforation 10 for the passage of a bolt, and the part of the washer which is composed of the single thicknessof the strap 8 is likewise provided with a bolt hole 11. washers are mounted upon the projecting ends of the bolts 6, which protrude beyond the side walls of the clip or cuff, the doubled portions of said washers being mounted upon the upper bolts, while the single-thicknesses of the washers engage the lowerbolts, the inturned ends 9 being placed in contact with the side walls 2, thus leaving a space between said side walls and the lower ends of the In practice ,the two washers. This space is for the accommodation of a perforated ear formed upon such implement as it may be desired to connect with the plow-stock by means of my improved attaching device. Thus, for instance, in Fig. 2 of the drawings the wings 12 have been shown thus provided at their inner ends with upstanding ears 13, having perforations which engage the lower bolt 6 on each side of the cuff. It will be understood that by tightening the nut 7 down against the washer the ear 12 will be firmly clamped between the latter and the body of the clip, thereby securely holding and retaining the wing in any position to which it may be adjusted and without the least tendency to work loose.

In Fig. 31 haveshown the wing 12, secured to one side of the cuff, while a plow-point 15 is mounted upon the heel-bolt 16, which extends between the side walls of the clip. In this case the plow-point has been shown as provided'with a forwardly-extending flange at one side, as shown at 17, said flange constituting a root-cutter, and adjacent to the latter I have in addition shown a fender 18, which when the device is to be used for plowing close to young plants will guard and protect the latter. The particular forms of plow and fender are of course well known, as, it will be understood, are the wings constituting the plow illustrated in Fig. 2, my invention residing in the peculiar means for the attachment of these parts.

In Fig. 4: of the drawings 1 have shown attached to the clip or cuff a pair of ears, each comprising a depending portion 19, having near its upper edge a bolt-hole and near its lower edge a curved slot 21, concentric with said bolt-hole. Said depending body portion is provided at its upper edge with an obliquely-extending flanged bracket 22 to receive a short barrow-section 23, composed of a flat iron bar 24, provided with a plurality of curved teeth 25, which by reversing the said harrow section end for end may be pointed either forwardly or rearwardly, according to the work that is to be performed. The harrow-teeth at each end of the bar, which are specially designated 25, have screwthreaded portions at their upper ends, as shown at 26, to receive nuts 27 and 28, by

-means of which they may be adjustably and detachably connected with the flanged supporting member 22. It will be seen that by the construction of the device as just described the ear which forms the barrow-support may be tilted to various degrees of inclination by simply loosening the lower bolt 6 and adjusting the device by means of the curved slot 21, engaging said bolt.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed,

the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains.

The construction of my improved attachment is extremely simple and by means thereof a variety of implements commonly used in connection with a plow-stock may be attached quickly and effectively for operation, and such implements may, moreover, be readily and quickly interchanged, according to the work that is to be performed.

I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise structural details herein set forth, but reserve the right to any changes, alterations, and modification which may be resorted to within the scope of my invention and without departing from the spirit or impairing the efficiency thereof.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A plow attachment consisting of a cuff comprising a rear plate and two side walls extending forwardly from and at rightangles to said plate, the latter being provided with a plurality of perforations and said side walls being provided each with two perforations countersunk at their inner ends, in combination with flat-headed bolts extending through said perforations in the side walls and having nuts at their outer ends, and washers carried by said nuts and having their upper ends bent upon themselves, thereby doubling the thickness of the upper portions of said washers and providing for an intermediate space between the lower ends of the washers and the adjacent sides of the side walls of the cuff.

2. The combination with a plow-stock, of an attachment consisting of a cufl, comprising a rear plate having a plurality of perforations for the passage of the heel-bolt, and forwardlyextending side walls, each provided with perforations countersunk at their inner ends for the passage of connecting-bolts, ears mounted upon said bolts and provided at their lower ends with curved slots concentric with the up-v per bolt-holes and provided at their upper edges with obliquely-extending flanged supporting members, and reversible barrow-sections having curved teeth, the teeth at the ends of said harrow-sections having screwthreaded ends, and adjusting nuts bearing against the upper and under sides of said harrow-sections and adapted for connection with the flanged supporting means.
