.Leners Patent Nq. 'lamented-March 1o', 186s.
IMrEovEMENT IN INKINe-APrAEArUs ron oLoE-IuuNTINe.'
I Be it known that I, LAWRENCE B. WATERMAN, of-Indi'anapolis, MarionV county, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement inInking-Attachmeut for Printing-Presses for Printing in Colors; and I do hereby declare that the'followingis a clear, full, and exact-description of the construction and operation of the same,
reference being had to the annexed drawings,'making part of this 'specicatiom in which- Figure'l'v is a side longitudinal elevation. Figure 2 is an end sectional view. Figures, 4, and 5, are sectional partsof the same. l Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectionV ofthe inking-roller and its removable shaft. This invention has 'referenceto that classV of machines known as inking-att'achments or inking-appara'tuscs for printing-presses, by which one or more colors are produced by one: impression.
l My improvement consists: chiey :1s-follows.: Constructing the plates c cia of any thin .metal plate, 01'.cf wood, in form ofa segment of a circle, slotted at its centre to receive the screw-rod D, and it willrbelseen that thick or thin lines can be formedgsthese linesbeing used to transfer the ink from the ink-receiving rollers I J `to thetype-rollers usedl on the pressfbands'being formed on the type-rollers of different colors, in numbers V according to the number of sets of plates c and ink-receiving rollers I J used. But one set-of rollers I J and one set oi' plate s a'reshown in theaccompanying drawing, but additional'sets-may b'e attached to the cylinder p B,'when` more colors are produced. .I am aware that solidI lines could he used A'to produce the same effect that I make with my plates c c c, but by the useA of the 'platesc c 0, any thickness vof Aline caribe formed with little troilble, and the necessity obviated of making that number of .solid lines required to produce the same result.'
It will be seen that lines must be formed the sizesor thickness of all kinds of type made or used, hence the universal adaptationof theplates c a to produce that result, The cylinder B is 'made of iron, being turned -trueand smooth, and is provided with raised iianges at'either end, for the purpose of securing the screw-rod D, 'ou to which the plates e e c are attached, thescrewrod I) being provided with a thread its entirehlength, so that the linesmay'be adjusted at any point thereon, separatelyand 4firmly. secured to saidrrod D, by means of the nutse e. ,The motion oftheV ink-receiving rollers vI and J, necessary for `the distribution of 4th-ink, and
also for throwing on and ofthe 'cylinder or plates c c c at a proper point, lis derived 'from the motion of the cylinder B. The rotary motion necessary for the distribution' of .the ink is driven by the pulleys P and L, by means of a. belt. The sliding or-reciprocating' motion of the rollers I and J on and oii the plates cdc c,is produced bythe sliding boxwHcoming in`contact with the cam G, which is attached to either ends of the cyinder B, `'on its-journals or bearings, all 'of which is produced-with certainty andcheapness, and with little resistance to the cylinder Il.V To facilitate the attaching and detaching of the roller I in order to wash it, (it being a soft composition roller,) independent ofthe roller J, which. is made of wood, andl does not'require to lbe removed for the purpose of washing or otherwise preparing` for work, Iprovide Othe soft roller I with a. hollow core, y, 'pandinsertthe rod K its entire length, .as shown in fig- 1 the rod K extending` through the core y ateithcr end, which forms :ajournal or bearing to turnupon, which I'regard as being very useful and labor-saving, obviatingthe necessity vof removing the hard roller j, and the boxes and appurtenances belonging thereto.
I believe I havelihvrntedsome useful, cheap, and labor-saving improvements ininking`machines, `which I haveherein' described, which Iclaimras my invention, and desire to secure by'Let'ters Patent. I do not claim sector-plates as new with me, but' h i 'What I do claim, and' desire toj secure by Letters Patent; isl g 1. Ihe screwdodD'l and nuts ee, in combination with sectional plates c; c having slots c"c, all combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 4
2. TheVinkin'g-roller I, provided with the removable shaft K, working in asliding bearing H,lin combination with the distributing-roller J, having ixcd bearings J', substantially V:is and for the purpose set forth.
I i L. B. WATERMAN.
