PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT B. GARDELLA, OF NEVVBURG, OHIO.
JOURNAL-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,709, dated November 10, 1903.
' Application filed July 27, 1903. Serial No. 167,109. (No model.)
1'0 60% whom itmay concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. GARDELLA, acitizen of the United States, residing at Newbnrg, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Im provements in Journal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to the journal boxes of car-axles, and has for its object to provide improved means for securing the brass in place in the saddle or cap, to prevent theft of the brass, and also to prevent the brass from turning over or getting out of place.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the brass.- Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cap or saddle. 3 is a side elevation of the parts assembled, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the cap or saddle 6 has an undercut groove 7 on the under side thereof, into which fits the corresponding tenon 8 of the brass 9. A crosskeyway 10 is cut in the tenon, registering with a similar keyway 11, cut in the cap. When the parts are assembled, a key 12 is driven in and is held in between the sides of the journal-box, so that the brass cannot be taken out without taking out the cap. The dovetail joint produced by the groove and tenon prevents the brass from coming out and also from turning sidewise or otherwise getting out of place. The key 12 prevents the brass from being pulled out endwise.
The brass may be renewed by taking the cap out of the journal-box, knocking out the key, taking out the old brass, and placing a new one.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a journal-bearing, the combination with a cap having an undercut groove and a brass having a dovetailed tenon fitting said groove, of a key fitting in a keyway crossing the groove and tenon.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT B. GARDELLA.
