IMPROVEMENT IN 4ISEIr-EUIES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: y
Be it known that I, IsnIAH HONEYWELL, of Toledo, in the 'county of Tama, and State of Iowa, haveinvcnted a newend useful Improvement in Bee-Hives;. and I do herehydeclare that' the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same,A reference being had' to the annexed drawings,'making part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a perspective view, part of the top being represented es broken away. Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinalsection. i. The same letters indicate identical parts in both the figures.'
A A are square boxes, with openings at A for the bees to enter the hive. They are closed upon= three sides, the fourthside having gratings, A. B is a, metallic plate sliding between the grated ends of the boxes A, which are set one 'against the other. C C are caps resting upon a, honey-board, D, resting upon'the boxes A, and having a series of transverse slots opening through it to form a, communication from the hivesA into the caps C. In the arrangement of the slots D end eeps'C, the middle box and slot are placed over the'gratcd partition A so that by means of the bent end of the metallic plate B, inserted between the boxes, the bees may be shut o" from entering the middle cap, fromeitlier end of the hive, as may lie-desired. VBy means of the intermediate metallic plate, the-hivemay be separated whenever it may bedesired; thus, when the hive is full, the parts may be seperated and a new set of boxes be substituted in place ,of either, thus dividing the hive, and giving each new apartments in which to Vcontinue their work. `So,too, when thev bees in eitherl of the subdivisions are found to be without a queen, they may, by means of the slide, be excluded from part of the hive, andthe construction Vof drone-comb limited, until they are provided with a. queen. A series of slats are placed Aacross the top of theboxes immediately below the honey-board, which rests upon them, so that the bees cannot build comb between the two. The caps are covered by the top .cover E.
What I claim as my invention, und desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the boxes A, metallic partition B, caps-C, cover E, and honey-board D, respectively, constructed and arranged. for use substantially as set forth. i
In testimony whereof, I havesigned my' name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ISAIAH HONEYWELL.
'Witnessesi D. VD. APPLEGATE, G. L. BAILEY.
