AUTOMATIC OPERATING FLUSH-TANK FOR CLOSETS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,618, dated November 10, 1903.

Application filed June 28, 1900.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARK CONNOR, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at New Brighton P. 0., in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Flush-Tanks for Closets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improved automatic-operating flush-tank for closets; and it consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter. I

In the accompanying drawing the-figure is a side sectional elevation of a tank and automatic-operating siphon for flushing closets, the same being constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.

To construct a flush-tank in accordance with my invention, I provide. a tank 1 of a suitable size and form of construction and connect to the bottom of the same a pipe 2, leading to the closet. Attached to or forming a part of this pipe'2 is a water seal con? sisting of an inside shell 6, having an open top, and an outside shell 5, closed at the top and joined at the base to the outlet-pipe 2. Entering through the top of these two shells 5 and 6, forming the seal, is a pipe 7, which extends upward and is connected to an enlarged elbow 8, provided with an integral downwardly-extending pipe 9, which terminates a short distance above the bottom of the tank. A supply-pipe 3, provided with a valve or cook at, is provided to furnish a supply of water to the tank..

In operation the water-supply pipe 3 fills the tank with water to the level indicated Serial No. 21,946. (No modeld upon the drawing, and after reaching this level the water entering the top of the tube 7 forms a siphon which will quickly exhaust the water from the tank until the column of water is broken at the lower end of the pipe 9. The tank 1 is again slowly filled with water from the supply-pipe 3 and again emptied when it has reached the level above mentioned, thereby producing an automatic-operated flush for closets.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a device of the type set forth, the combination with a tank of a supply-pipe therefor, a drain-pipe secured to the bottom of said tank, awater seal mounted on said drain-pipe within the tank, said seal comprising an outer closed shell secured to the base of the drainpipe and having an opening in the upper end thereof to receive a pipe, an inner smaller shell provided with an open top arranged within said outer shell, a vertical pipe extending through said outer shell and into the smaller shell, flanges formed on said pipe near each end thereof, the lower flange resting on the outer shell and the upper flange supporting an elbow, said elbow having an enlarged upper end provided with an opening to receive the upper end of said flanged pipe, and a downwardlyextendingpipe integral with the other end of said elbow and extending to a short distance of the bottom of the tank, substantially as described.
