COMBINED AUTOMATIC SPINDLE-OILER.
i SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 743,371, dated November 3, 1903. Application filed September 15I i302. Serial No. 123,394. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: f
Be it known that I, NIMROD P. AGNEW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Spindle Oilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lubricating attachments for vehicle-axles; and it consists of a capped cylinder adapted to hold lubricating fluid, the cylinderbeing seated in a peripheral hole in the hub, and a wad of-wool or similar material within the cylinder in position to wipe the axle, the wad being held by a looped wire secured to the cap of the cylinder.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a transverse section of a vehicle-hub provided with my improved lubricating attachment, the latter being in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is an elevation of onehalf of the hub, omitting spokes, showing the lubricating-cylinder cap projecting from the hub. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the cap of said cylinder.

3 is an externally-threaded cylinder or tube for containing the lubricant. Said cylinder is provided near its upper or outer end with a squared fiange or shoulder 3f.
4 is an internally-threaded cap, having a square portion 4, adapted to be turned with a wrench.
6 is the upper end of a depending stem,
which is permanently secured to the cap 4, either by riveting in the manner shown or in any preferred manner. The lower end of said stem is bent, forming a loop 6, Before the loop is closed a wad of wool orsimilar material is folded around the stem. The loop is then closed. The middle portion of the wad is tightly clasped between the sides of the loop. The wad of wool should be large enough so that it will be compressed by the cylinder 3 when placed therein, and it should extend below the end of the depending stem 6, as.
shown, so that it will slightly engage the spindle when the cap 4 is screwed down upon the iiange 3B. A barb 8 is attached to the stem 6, This barb projects upwardly, and
its purpose is to more firmly engage the wad for extraction thereof in case the loop should break.
The wad 7 will automatically admit an even tiow of the lubricant to the spindle as long as there is a suiiicient quantity of lubricant in the cylinder 3. When the wad runs dry, the cap 4 is partially removed from the cylinder high enough to admit the spout of an oil-can to the interior of the cylinder. The oil is poured in on top of the wad, which is sufficiently porous to let the oil seep through it and keep the spindle lubricated. A suitable quantity of lubricant is placed in the cylinder, and the cap is screwed back in position against the iiange 3a.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, i'sl. The combination,of an oil-cylinder adapt` ed to be secured in a radial hole in a vehiclehub and its thimble, with the outer end of said cylinder projecting from the hub, a
'threaded cap covering the outer end of the cylinder, a wire within the cylinder, one end of said wire being secured to said cap, the other end of the wire being looped, a wad of fibrous material held by said loop, said wad .being under compression and sufficiently large to touch the axle, and a barb on the looped portion of said Wire, said barb being directed toward said cap, substantially as described. i
' 2. The combination,of an externally-threaded oil-cylinder adapted to be secured in a radial hole in a vehicle-hub and its thimble, with the outer end of said cylinder projecting'from the hub, a threaded cap covering the outer end of the cylinder, an internal wire secured to said cap at one end, its other end being doubled upon itself, a wad of Woolly material held by said doubled portionof the wire, said wad being under compression and touching the axle,and a barb on said wire within the wad, said barb being directed toward said cap, substantially as described.
