PATENT OFFICE.
DESK ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,495, dated October 13, 1903.
Application filed January 20, 1903. Serial No. 139,865. (No model.)
' To all. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residingv at West Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia. and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make .y
and use the same.
Myinvention relates to certain improvements in attachments particularly adapted for desks, being in the nature of a supplemental desk-top.
It has for its object to promote convenience and comfort, more especially in adjusting or disposing the work or object to greater advantage to the angle of sight or observation, &c.
It is also characteristic of simplicity of construction, is cheaply manufactured, and is readily adapted for use and application to the desk.
It consists of the combination and arrangement 0f parts for effecting the aforesaid ob- A jects, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the-accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a plan view thereof. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical section,
and Fig. 4t is la modification.
It will be understood that latitude is allowed herein as to details, as they may be changed as circumstances suggest without departing from the spiritof my invention and the same remain intact and be protected.
In carrying out my invention I preferably employ a board 1, which may be termed a said board or top, said rod 3 extending through arcuate slots 2, produced in the brackets 2.
Said rod is equipped or providedv upon .its outer threaded ends with preferably millednuts 4a, also passing through the slots of the brackets 2, and between the inner ends of said nuts and said hangers or bearings are preferably arranged ratchet-faced disks or plates 5 5. Two ratchet platesbr disks are arrangedat each side of said desk-top or board for engagement in effecting the locking of said rod in position as relates to said brackets `and arms 6 6, through which said rods also pass, said arms also being pivoted at their lower ends about centrally of the base portion of said quadrants or brackets. Preferably interposed between each pair or two of said ratchet plates or disks is a rubber washer or packing 7, of such character to permit of being sufliciently compressed -upon screwing said nuts home or tightly in position as to allow the teeth or faces of said ratchet-disks to interlock, as in fastening said parts in place, and whereby upon the loosening of said nuts said rubber washersor packings will have the effect to automatically separate said ratchet disks or plates and also ob- Viate the rattling of said parts in their movetion with said armand bracket for obvious reasons. Said desk-top or board has also secured thereto near its normally upper or rear edge a handheld 9 or like device for the'convenient raising and lowering of said top or board.
It being desired to bring said supplemental desk-top or board into use, the various parts are loosened and said board or top raised to the desired angle to bring the work or object to be placed thereon to a'point of greater convenience for the user, in which position said boardy or top is held by again tightening said various parts. Of course by reversing this adjustment and movement of parts said board or supplemental desk-top may be folded back down upon the primaryV desk-top out of the way, as when not required for use. Said desk-top or board may be provided on its sur- Said brace orrod'is also adjustable at its points of connec-` IOO face next to the primary desk-top with pieces of felt or like material to prevent said board from marring the primary desk-top, as would otherwise likely occur as said board is raised and lowered.
In the modification as disclosed by Fig. 4 I may employ in lieu of the brackets 2 horizontal lateral pieces or plates 10, having elongated slots or guideways l0a therein, and connect up with said lateral plates the arms 6, preferably by providing said plates upon their upper edges With apertured extensions or ears l0b and engaging with said extensions or ears fixed lateral studs or pivots formed upon said arms. This arrangement permits the board l to occupy a horizontal position, with its supporting-rod resting upon the upper edges of said lateral plates. Right-angled brackets c, screwed or otherwise secured to the primary desk-top, are provided with lateral studs 10, engaging the slots iu the lateral plates to permit when the board l is lowered, as when not in use, the sliding of said board back in under the shelves ordrawers of the desk Well out of the Way.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a board or support, lateral brackets suitably supported in position, arms pivoted to said brackets, a rod passing through said arms, said rod being connected to said board orsupport, nuts threaded upon said rod, and ratchet-faced disks or plates arranged upon said rod and adapted to be interloeked by the action of said nuts.
2. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a board or support, lateral brackets suitably supported in position, arms pivoted to said brackets,a rod passing through said arms and having connection with said board or support, nuts threaded upon said rod and ratchet-faced disks or plates arranged upon said rod, and elastic washers or packings interposed between said disks or plates.
3. A supplemental desk-top, comprising a board, pivoted arms or supports having pivotal connection with said board, means for effecting the adjustment of said arms or supports in disposing said boards for-use, and means to provide for bodily sliding said board, together with its supports, rearwardly, as when not in use.
4. A supplemental desk-top, comprising a board, pivoled arms or supports having pivotal connection with said board, means for effecting the angular adjustment of said arms or supports in disposing said board for use, and for moving said board so as to cause it to extend beyond the forward edge of the primary desktop, and means to provide for bodily sliding said board together with its supports, rearwardly, as when not in use.
5. A supplemental desk-top, comprising a board, pivoted arms or supports having pivotal connection with said board, slides carry ing said arms orsupports and base-pieces having lateral studs or projections engaging elongated slots in said slides.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' JACOB HOFFMAN.
