SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,088, dated October 13, 1903.
Application filed June 30, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN HENRY WHITE- HEAD, residing at Apperley Bridge, and AL- FRED ROBERT WHITEHEAD and WILLIAM EDWARD LAYLAND, residing at Leeds, in the county of York, England, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Circnlar combing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to enable the small comb-circles of that type of combing-machines known as Nobles circular combing-machines to be removed and replaced, which is often necessary and desirable, without it being necessary, as at present, to take down the pillars carrying the top driving-shaft and the dabbing-motions and other attachments,which, besides being costly in the labor entailed,requires a considerable time, during which the output from the machine is completely lost to the mill owner. This object we attain by a new combination and arrangement of parts of such machine and a new construction of other parts, all of which are hereunder described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical section of a machine embodying our invention, taken on the line B B of Fig. 2 except in the neighborhood of the comb-circle, where the section is on the line A A of the latter figure, Fig. 2 being a plan on line C O of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section, to a larger scale, across one of the small comb-circles; and Fig. 4, an elevation at right angles to Fig. 3. Fig. 5' is a plan, looking upward, of the gearing-plate; and Fig. 6, a vertical section of the same on line D D of Fig. 5.

thrown off to the inside of instead of to the outside of the small comb-circles, we make the throwing-off knives 17?, (see Figs. 3 and 4) to successively decrease in height from the outer to the inner sidesof the small combcircles. In order to accommodate this altered combination of pillars a a, smallcombcircles c e, and noil-shoots g g and to still allow of the gearing-plate 1 being readily planed or turned, we form the gearing-plate as two diametrically opposite ring-surfaces joined diagonally across, (see Fig. 5,) so as to leave recesses (marked 3') for the lower ends of the noil-shoots, and we support it by curved feet in, cast in one with it and extending circularly the full length of the said ringsurfaces. It will be evident that this combination as described allows the small combcircles to be taken OR the machine and replaced withont taking down the dabbing-motions, top cross-shaft, and the pillars or the vertical gearing-shafts 1, driving the gearing n, which pass down the pillars a a, being driven from the top cross-shaft I), and the construction of the gearing-plate t' as described allows of the noil-shoots g being readily withdrawn, which is necessary to enable the small comb-circles e e to be withdrawn. The curved feet is also serve incidentally to prevent any wool getting from the sliver-bobbins into the gearing n.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature and manner of carrying out our invention, whatwe claim asour invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
