JOHN ELLIS, or WHITE'PLAINS, NEWVYOBK.
Letters Patent No. 74,061, dated February 4, 1868.
MOVEMENT In some r012. HEATING WATER.
TO ALL WHOMfIT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J01!!! ELLIS, of White Plains, in: the connty'of Westchestcr, and State of New York, have invented anew and improved Boiler for Heating Water'; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,.which will enable others skilled in the art tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,'form ing a part of thisspecification, in which- Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved-boiler.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, the plane of section being indicated by the line. a: :r, fig. 1. p
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional elevation of the same, the plane of. section beinglindicated by the line ea s 2. t
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional elevation of the same, the plane of section being indicated by the line z z, fig. 2. V 1

- This invention relates to a new boiler-for heating water for buildings, green-houses, and other similar purposes, and consists in arranging a series of horizontal pipes between two hollow heads, in such a manner that the water will flow at least twice through'the tubes, so as to'be very completely heated. The boiler is not covered with or surrounded by the ordinary expensive iron-plates, but the pipes are simply ail-ganged in brickwoi-k, and some of the pipes form the grate of the boiler, The whole device is thus ver'ysimple and (tempera ti vely chca'pthe whole boiler actually consisting only of the two headsand of the pipes connecting the same.
A represents the front head of the boiler. Thesame is made of double sheet-metal wells, so as to be hollow, as shown in fig. 2, and is provided with a hole, a, through it for the. insertion of the fuel. The head A may also be cast into the required form; This hole can be closed by a fire door, b, as shown. B is the rear head of the boiler, made also of double shcet-metal plates, so as to be hollow, and has also'a hole, a, through itfor the-escape of'the smok'e. The head B can also be cast into the required shape. If desired, the'rear head can be made without the hole e,'the smoke escaping between the pipes, connecting the heads, to a suitable chimney. C C are a series of pipes, 'made of wrought or cast iron, or other suitable material. Their ends are fitted into the heads A and B, respectively. The whole furnace is built under a brick arch, and is sur-' rounded by brick walls, as is clearly indicated in figs. 1 and 2. The interior of the front head A is, by means of one or more plates; (or cores,) d, divided into two or more compartments. 4
The water enters the lower part of the front head through a pipe or pipes, D, and, rising inthehead, flows hack to the rear head through those pipes, C, which communicate with the lowerv compartment of the head A If only one partition, d, is in the head-A, the head 13 will be without a partition, sothat the watcrmay rise in the head B, and may ilow in the upper pipe 0 to the upper compartment of the head A, whence it is conducted oif'through pipes E. It the head A is divided by plates 0! into three or more compartments, the interior of the head B will also be subdivided by similar partitions, so that a still more frequent circulation of'thc water from one head to the other will be eii'ected. The fire is kindled upon the lower pipes C, whichare close enough together to enable the draught to circulate through tlie iire. The lower pipes are arranged nearlyon a semi circular line, as shown in figs. 3 and 4, so that the fuel will always fall to the centre, and infalling will be cleared of ashes. Any kind of fuel may be used in this boiler. Peat, wood, coal,'or cok'c can be employed. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is
The boiler for heating water, consisting of the two hollowheads connected 'by the tubes, and having no metallic sides or walls, the grate-bars being also tubulurfsaid heads subdivided into compartments, so that the water shall circulate freely through the boiler, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
