SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,615, dated October 6, 1903. Application filed March 27, 1903; berial N0. 149,781. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, READ BENEDICT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of West New Brighton, in the county and borough of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar or Cuff Buttons or Studs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a collar or and button or stud designed to facilitate its insertion into and its removal from the buttonhole or buttonholes with which it is used and designed to obviate excessive strain and wear upon the-corners of the buttonholes; and the invention consists mainly of a button or stud having a shank formed adj aoent to the head of the button with outwardly projecting flanges at one diameter of the shank and which coalesce with the sides of the head, the opposite diameter of the shank being formed with other shoulders parallel or in line with the angles formed by the said flanges, so that the draw of the buttonholes in said angles will cause the said shoulders to spread the buttonholes, thus facilitating the turning of the button and also preventing excessive strain and wear upon the buttonholes. In other words, the invention consists mainly in forming the shank adjacent to the head with abrupt flangeswhich automatically shift the buttonholes backupon shoulderswhichspread the buttonholes.

The invention also consists in the special construction of the stud or button, all as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, to which reference is made and which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved stud or button. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view illustrating the use of the stud or button as a collar-button; and Fig. 4: is a plan view of the same, showing the neckband in section.

In the drawings, 2 designates 'the plate or base of the stud or button, 3 the shank, and l the head. The base 2 is of the usual circular and slightly disked form, or may be of any approved configuration. I prefer to construct the headet in the form shown-that is, in egg-shaped or prolate spheroidal form with the curved and slightly wedge-shaped edge 5 audwith the lower curved surfaces 6, but do not limit myself to any special form of head.

The shank 3 is round from the shoulders 7 to the base or plate 2. The shoulders 7 are in line with the longer axis of the head/l and beneath the lower curved surfaces 6 of the head. Besides being formed with the shoulders 7, the shank is formed with the flanges 8, thinner than the shank and which are in line with the shorter axis of the head, forming a thin plate which joins the shank to the head 4 of the stud. The lower portions of the flanges 8 form angles 9 with the shank, which are in line with the shoulders 7, and the edges of the said flanges are slightly curved, as shown.

In the use of the stud or button, say, as a collar-button or as in a band 10 the head is pressed through one of the buttonholes with thelonger diameter of the head in line with the length of the but-tonhole. The, buttonhole slips back upon the sholders 7 of the shank and is spread thereby. The second buttonhole is now pressed over the head, the longer diameter of the head being, as before, easily held in line with the length of the but tonhole. This, like the other, is slipped back upon the sh0ulders7 of the shank and then l the head of the button is given a one-quarter turn to bring the longer diameter of the head at right angles to and across the buttonholes, in which position it will be held by one of the buttonholes drawing in one of the angles 9 and engaging or partially engaging with the thinner and wider portion of the shank adjacent to the head of the button.

In unbuttoning the band from'the head of the button the thumb and finger will be used to press the front buttonhole back on the shoulders 7 or to slightly draw the shankforward through the buttonholes, thus bringing the round portion of the shank within the buttonholes, so that the button may be easily turned to bring the longer diameter thereof in line with the buttonholes, in which position the buttonholes may be easily pulled ICQ over the shoulders 8 and off from the head of the button.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. I11 a button or stud, 'a shank formed at its upper end with shoulders at one diameter thereof and formed With a thinner and wider portion which forms angles adjacent to said shoulders, in combination with a-spheroidal head mounted on said thinner and wider portion, substantially as described.

2. A button or stud having a shank 3 formed at its upper end with shoulders 7 and with thinner and Wider fiangesS and angles 9 adjacent to the shoulders 7 in combination with a spheroidal head mounted on said thindiameter of the shank and Which are thinner and wider than the said shoulders, a head mounted upon said flanges, the said flanges forming angles with the shank Which are adj acent to the said shoulders, substantially as described.
