U ITED STATES I Patented September 29, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN FREDK. NEI-IR, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOB TO BENZIGER BROTHERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MEANS FOR ATTACHIN'G PINS To METAL PLATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,305, dated September 29, 1903.
Application filed October 15, 1902. Serial Nth-127,361- (No model.) I
is difiicult or practically impossible to solder metal to aluminium, it is the general practice in making badges or the like of this metal to mechanically secure a brass or similar metal plate in the back of the aluminium plate,-
and to this brass plate the pin is soldered. Such method requires considerable time and consequently adds to the cost of production. It is the object of my invention to provide a simple means for securing pins to plates without employing solder.
I will describe a means for attaching pins to metal plates embodying my invention, and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a back View of a badge or plate, showing one of the steps of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the pin. Fig. 3 is a back view illustrating the badge and pin connected. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 shows aslight modification.
metal plate made in the form of a badge. In the back of the plate is formed a vermicular channel 6 to receive the correspondinglyshaped body or back portion 7 of the pin. By so shaping the parts the pin is held from a laterally-rocking movement. After placing the pin back or body in the channel portions of the metal plate at the sides of the channel are struck up by a suitable tool and bent down upon the back or body, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3, the lugs being shown at 8.
In Fig. 5 I have shown the channel 9 as having short curves or turns between opposite lugslO, while in the example first described the channel has a practically straight central portion and the curves appear at the ends.
Having .thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 1 HERMAN FBEDK. NEHR.
