TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY OONOERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. WILBUR, of Ohicopee, in the county .of Hampden, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Machine for( Shelling Corn; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my machine, and- Figure 2 is n. sectional view ofthe under side ofthe bonnet.
In the construction of-my cylinder, which is made of east metal, it may be cast with theribs and points on the cylinder or in the bonnet, or they may be put on the cylinder after it is cast plain, and may be made-of iron or steel, and attached in any ordinary manner to the cylinder. In iig. 1, A', the frame; A, the cylinder; B, the bonnet; O C, the weights, attached to cords passing over pulleys, and are fastened te the lower part of the bonnet, to hold it down on the cylinderwhen shelling corn D, the hopper, through which the corn is fed to the cylinder and bonnet; E, the vibrating-arm, attached to the'side of the frame and to the hopper D, and by which means a. reciprocating motion is given to the hopper, to assist in feeding down to the cylinder; F, the point at which the cords are attached to the bonnet B; H, the crank, attached to the shaft or arm E; K K K, the ribs on the Kcylinder A; L, the points or teeth in theirrelative positions. It will be seen that I construct the ribs of a V-sbape, niade in sections. 'lhese ribs are placed on the cylinder, with the point ot' the V in the direction the cylinder' revolves in shellingr the corn. ,'lhe point is set about the middle of the cylinder, and thon points out to the periphery of the-same. Other ribs of V-shape are set on the cylindereach succeeding ono being about hail an inch shorter, until the given section, say four inches, or in accordance to the size of the cylinder and the Anumber of sections I may design to nse.Y A 'lhe open or wide end of these V ribs, all in each section, terminate in a line at right angles on the periphery ofthe cylinder. In the operation of my invention, motion isgivcn to the cylinder by the crank, or any other power may be applied, the corn being put into the hopper. As the cylinder is made to revolve by means of the crank H and arm or shaft E, the hopper is made to oseillate, thus feeding tlie corri down on to the cyiinder, and under the bonnet (the bonnet being pressed np tightly against it by means of weights C C) giving to it an elastic motion.l
As the ears are pressed forward by the teeth L, the sharp edges of the ribs sink between rows or kernels of the corn, while the JV-form ot' the ribs gives a lateral motion which rends the seed from the ear or cob, and the same forms of ribs and teeth on the under side ofthe bonnet greatly facilitate the operatioon of shelling. l
Having thus described the nature of my invention, I do notbroadly claim ribs on a cylinder', as this is not new; nordo I claim diamond-shaped ribs ror toethed bonnets, or the combination of both, as described by Edwin F. Sherman, in his application for improvements in corn-shellers now pending in the Patent Oiiice; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The V-shaped ribs K, in combination with teeth-or points L on theface ofthe cylinder A and bonnet B, constructed'substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. I claim` the crank H and shatter arm E, in combinationwitlrthe hopper D, constructed as described,
