PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE G. KNIFFIN, OF BAYONNE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO BOYNTON FURNACE COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., AOORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
FIRE-POT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,203, dated January 12,1904. Application filed geptember 1, 190 3. $eria1N0. 171,473- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. KNIFFIN, of Bayonne, Hudson county, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Pots, of which the following is a full,
- clear, and exact description.
and to be supported upon an ash-pit or base portion of a square shape. As previously made, fire-pots supporting cylindrical forms of furnace-bodies have tapered to a slighter diameter to the bottom and rested on a circular support embodied in an ash-pit or base. In these constructions it has been necessary to provide a grate that fits a round aperture, and with the short grate occupying the arcs of the bottom circular opening and the framework to support the grate there has been a space of about two inches all round the inside of the bottom that has been practically dead as far as the fire was concerned, inasmuch as it was impossible with the round grate to stir this matter that was lying around the periphery of the grate.
To these ends my invention consists of a fire-pot, the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to'the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar figures'of reference refer to similar parts throughout both views.
Figure 1 is a plan of my improved fire-pot, and Fig. 2 isa part elevation and part section of the same.
As shown in the drawings, the fire-pot is composed of the tapering body portion 10, that at the top'edge 11 is of a-circular shape and may have the recess 12 and the flange 13 to provide a seat for the furnace-body 14. The body portion 10 may be made plain, but
can also be provided, as shown in the drawings, with the corrugations 15 to provide more heating-surface. The body portion 10, as it extends down from the upper edge 11, becomes slightly smaller and terminates in the square bottom portion 16. A square opening provides more grate-surface than if the sides of the bodyportion 10 had simply ended at the bottom in a round opening, as is the case with the present constructions. vantage of having additional grate-surface a square grate performs a better service, as in the shaking or turning of a square grate all parts of the fire are disturbed and shaken down.
As shown in Fig. 2, any suitable form of base portion 17 can be arranged to support the fire-pot, which is shown in the drawings as being solid; but a similar construction can be applied to fire-pots of hot-water or steam heaters where it is thought desirable to make them hollow to form a water-chamber.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a fire-pot circular on the outside and converging to form a rectangular bottom opening, the said pot being entirely closed except at the top and bottom.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a fire-pot closed for its entire height, said firepot being circular at the top and essentially rectangular at the bottom and tapering from top to bottom.
8. A fire-pot, comprising a body portion closed except at top and bottom, said fire-pot being corrugated and tapering and provided with openings at top and bottom, the former being essentially circular and the latter essentially rectangular.
In testimony whereof I have subscribed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE G. KNIFFIN.
