Description

IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-suore.
fitte; ,stimule numb is irritiert' Esteri nmrt rut nuttig um t its nur.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: l v- Be it-known that I, GEORGE T. CHAPMAN, of, NewYork city, in tli'unty and"Stte`bl"`N`w York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Horse-Shoes; and I dohereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and ena-ct descriptionofthe samereference beinghad .to the accompanying drawings, and tol the letters of referencemarked t-hercon.-
The nature' of my invention relates to the construction of'horse-sho'es with removable calks, and it consists in the-mode of attaching and securing the same to the shoe, and has'for its object asimple, easy, and eective means of accomplishment, whereby the same' can be cheaply made, and the old and worn-out calks can beeasily removed and replaced bynewv ones without removing the shoerfrom the foot. On 'reference to the drawings- Figure 1 represents a perspective'rie'w' ofjnly improved shoe.
Figure' 2 represents the same with the call( removed.
Figure@ represents the'calk. Y l
Figure 4 represents a section on'the line a 6,-ig. 1, showing the'means of securing lthe calls.
Figure 5 represents a. section on the linee d, fig. 1, showing a. modification of the means of securing'the calk, and A Figure l6 represents a section on the line ef of iig. 1, showing another modification of the same. Y
representsthe ybody of the shoe, which is secured to the foot, by nails'or screws, inrthe'ordinary manner, and having the rectangular perforations a a, Svc. B is a continuous calli, preferably made of steel,.having lugs, .b b, Ste., correspondingto the perforations, a, inv the body\fportion A. The two parts are joined together by insertingthe said lugs b in the perforations d, asy will be readily understood by'inspection of the drawings.
The sectional viewgg. 4, showslhy improved mode of securing the two parts together. a represents nails or pins, driven into holes bored or punched from the outer upper edge of the shoe on the `line between the lugs and" the end wall of the perforations, and terminating at Itheapezriof the angle formed by the vunder side of the shoe A and the inner 'inclined face ofthe calk B, so that anequal amount of metal is removed from those parts 4of the lng, and the shoe bounded by one e'nd of the perforations end the corresponding face oil-the lugs;
V-I'prefer to bore or punch the two parts separately, so as to give thema snicient amountof draw to -insure the parts lbeing drawn tightly together. l y I Y d represents depressions formed in the under side of the shoe, adjacent to the lower termination of the pinholes, into which the ends of the nails may be bentto prevent them from working loose; or they may be bent around into the angle formed by the 'lower face ofthe shoe and the calls. i
As many pins may be used as there are lugs on the calk; or two maybe used, one on each side.
The pins may be'drive'n, through the holes from the opposite direction, iil preferred, and the holes may be rnade of the same diameter throughout; or they may be made tapering," as preferred.r i
Figsf and 6 representmodilcations ofnny improvement.' g is a boss', 4'which may be raised up from the body-portion of the shoe A, on the under side, by 'swaging or otherwise,.tl1eV face ofwhich is inclined, as infi-gs, 2, 1, and 5, through which a hole may be tapped, and countersunk at a'right angle to the said inclined face, 'and asc'rew, e, maybe inserted, so as to bearsnuglyon the shoulder of a recess formed on the lng, asrcleurly shown at lz, fig.' 5; or,as in g. 6, the holeV may be tapped so that on the side `nez-:t to thelug the threads may be ont into it suieentl'y to be firmly held inplaeelbythescrew e.
` It willbe observed that my improved method of attahments adapted as well to the ordinary toe and heclcalks as to that wliie'hI have described, and that to'remove a calk' requires only the withdrawalof the pins or screws, when4 the two parts may be easily separated. l v v i Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desir-e to secure by'Iietters Patent, is- 1. The continuous detachable calk B,'combined with the part A, substantially as described,
' 2. I also claim the continuous detachable calk` B and pin C, in combination with the part A, substantially as described.
Witness: v JonN VD.,B'Loo'1z, Y CHAsA. Frsn.
