RAIL-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,672, dated January 5, 1904.
Application filed May 8, 1903. Serial No. lfl'O. (No model.)
.To all whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED LEE VINYARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at-Slidell, in the parish of St. Tammany and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints; and I do hereby declare the following to be a f ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompan ying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in rail-joints, and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient device for holding together the meeting ends of adjacent sections of rails.
A further object is to provide an improved combined fish-plate and rail-chair.
With this and other objects in view the invention comprises an arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one part of my device. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the other part. Fig.
3 is an end elevation showing the rail in section. Fig. 4; is a horizontal section ou the line 4 4 of Fig. 3 With the rail removed.
My invention comprises fish- plates 6 and 7, each of which has a base-plate 6a and 7a, respectively, which overlap under the base of the rail and form a chair therefor. Both baseplates have extensions 6b and 7b, respectively, having holes 6e and 7s to receive the spikes. The joint between the parts is formed by tongues and grooves in the respective parts. The base-plate 6"', which is the under plate, has inclined tongues 8, extending diagonally across the line lof the rails, and -the upper base-plate '7a has grooves. 9, which receive said tongues. By this construction the iishplates are interlocked when the parts are assembled, and lateral and longitudinal displacement is prevented. Y The base-plate 7a overlaps the base-plate 6, and the latter has spike-holes 6d, which register with the spikeholes 7 c in the former. When the spikes are driven through these registering holes, the parts will be securely held against separation. The sh-plates proper have bolt-holes 9a foi-'the usual horizontal bolts 10, which pass through the web of the rail.
In use the fish-plates are first interlocked and spiked to the sleepers. The rails are then inserted endwise therebetween and secured by the bolts 10.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as'new, aud desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. A rail-joint comprising fish-plates having overlapping base-plates provided with inclined interlocking tongues and grooves and extending under the base of the rail, and registering spike-holes through the base-plates, substantially as described.
2. A rail-joint comprising sh-plates having overlapping base-plates extending under the base of the rail, one of said `base-plates having inclined grooves, and the other having inclined tongues tting the grooves for interlocking the base-plates, and extensions on each side of the base-plates having registering spike-holes on one side, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED LEE VINYARD.
