Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
FRANKLIN STEWART, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAFETY-TUBE FOR LAMPS.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 7,484; dated July 2, 1850.
To all whom, t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN STEWART, M. D., of Philadelphia, in thecounty of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Construction of Lamps to be Used for Containing Inflammable Materials; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing an inner pipe to be stationary inserted into piece of metal or other material in the lamp in such a manner as to receive the wick and permit the top of the lamp to be screwed on and oif at pleasure, but so arranged that if a person attempted to remove the top while the lamp is burning, the light or flame would be instantly extinguished.
To enable others skilled in the art, to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct lamps nin any of the known forms as used for containing iniiammable materials, but in order to obviate the danger arising from lamps being filled while burning or lighted, or from the top being removed while the lamp is burning, I make a second tube (A in the accompanying drawings) similar to the one belonging to top (D) which is inserted into a piece of metal (B) made stationary or revolving but so arranged in the body of the lamp as to be there permanent at C, which tube A receives and holds the wick `and the top of the lamp D is then put on by passing it over the stationary or inner pipe A. The lamp then being lighted the top cannot be removed without extinguishing the light or flame, thereby rendering it a safety spirit lamp and pre venting dangerous accidents arising from lamps being filled while burning.
No. l is section of a lamp represented as having one burner in the dra-Wing. No. 2 is section of a lamp representing two burners in the drawing. No. 3 is the lamp in perspective.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The application or addition of inner pipe or pipes (one or more as the case may be) inserted into a piece of metal or other material as before described being either stationary or revolving thereby preventing the top of the lamp from being removed without drawing it over the inner pipe or pipes and thus extinguishing the Haine.
FRANKLIN STEVART.
