Description

HENRY W. LOUDEN, OF EPHRATA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 74,837, daten February 25,' 1868.

TO ALLYWHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. LOUDEN, of Ep'hrata, in the county of Lancaster, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement for Beating Eggs or the like, for culinary purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,'and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this speeication, in which- Figure lis a perspective View of the box and top, with its gearing in place.
' Figure 2, a vertical section ofthe entire combination.
Figure 3, a perspective view of the combined beater and gearing anneired.
Figure 4, a plan view of the gearing. l
The nature of my invention consists in providing a box, of any suitable material, combined with a cover,
readily put on and taken oif, so geared as to revolve two or more beatersv in opposite directions, by meansvof al crank-handle, for beating eggs, mining cake-batter, or like culinary purposes.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.v
The box K is made with a flange or rim, le, in which there are oblong slots for the reception of hooks on the lower side of the top rim t, overlapping the lange c. There is" a socket or step, in the centre of the bottom of the box, to receive the central shaft' A, ot` the beater, iig. 3. lhe top or cover T has a central opening and a bracket I, with a bearing for the'upper end of the shaft A. There is also a sliding door, J, 0n n pivot, and secured in a catch on said top or cover T, besides a. small pinion, G, and a pair of cogged wheels, E F, with a crank-handle, H, with their several bearings on the same.- The beater consists of a shaft or spindle, A, having a cogged pinion, a, near the upper end, and an aiiixed beater, D D, with reeurved ends, 0l d, near -the bottom. Around this spindle A there is a pipe or sleeve, B, provided with a cogged pinion, b, coming directly under -the pinion a, on thespindle A. This pipe B is provided with cross-beaters C C7, so placed Vthat the one passes through or between the beater D and its recurved ends CZ, and the other over the same, in theirl revolutions. l v
The operation is such that when the cover and beaters are in place, as shown by iigs. 1 and 2, the upper of the larger cogged wheels E meshes into the pinion a on the spindle A. The under one, F,imeshes into the independent side pinion G, which latter meshes into the pinion on the sleeve B. The wider or double-eogged wheel or wheels E F, being connected with the crank-handle II, impart atwofohl or reverse motion, by means' of the pinion G, to the respective pinions aand b, and cause the beaters D d and C C to revolve rapidlymin contrary directions, so as to produce a thorough beating and mixing of the material within the box, as can readily be understood by their action.
The compound movement may have been used for other purposes, so that I do notbroadly claim the: gearing, separately considered. I am not aware that any machine for beating eggs nrmixing batter, for culinary purposes, has ever been used substantially in the manner specified, and knowing its utility, I believe it to be both novel and useful.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the double beaters D [Z C O', pipe or sleeve B, and 'spindle A, wit'h theipinions a b, in combination with the box or cover K T, cogged gear and handle, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
HENRY W. LOUDEN.
