PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. DARLING, OF MARSI-IALLTOWN, IOWA. v
' VEHICLE-SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,349, dated December 29, 1903.
Application filed March 4, 1903. Renewed November 16. 1903. erial No. 181,413. (NomodeL) T0 at whom it may concern.- 7
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. DARLING, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Marshalltown, Marshall county, Iowa, have invented a new and useful Vehicle-Seat, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide means for transforming a buggy into a runabout.
My invention consists in the construction of a buggy-seat with a removable and replaceable panel in the back thereof.
My invention consists, further, in the construction, arrangement, and combination of elements hereinafter set-forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aperspective illustrating a topbuggy constructed with a removable and replaceable panel in the seat-back thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective illustrating the same device, the buggy-top and removable panel being removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the panel removed from the seat-back. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the seat and seat-back, the cushions being removed.
In the construction of the device as shown the numeral designates a vehicle-body, and 11 a seat mounted thereon. The back portion 12 of the seat is fixed to the bottom thereof, and clips 13 13 are mounted on the.
rear face thereof and apertured vertically. The upper portion 14 of the seat-back is fixed to the upper end portions of props 15 16, and the lower ends of said props extend through the clips 13 13 and are removably and replaceably secured therein by keys 17. The upper portion of the seat-back is spaced apart from and parallel with the lower portion thereof and may be removed and replaced relative thereto by manipulation of the props 15 16 in the clips 13 13 after removing the keys l7, and the seatback presents the appearance of a runabout or road-wagon. The seat-frame is provided with prop-seats and top-props 18 are mounted thereon and support a top 19 in a common manner. A panel or removable section 20 is provided of a size and shape to fit inand fill the space between the upper and lower portions of the seat-back.
* tically in alinement with the apertures of the .clips 13 13.
The upper end portions of the angle-bars 21 22 extend within the clips 23 i on the forward face of the upper portion 14 of the seat-back and connect the upper margin of the panel to theupper portion 14.
When the panel 20 is mounted as shown in Fig. 1, the seat presents the appearance of a buggyseat of paneled formation. The back-stays 24 25 of the buggy-top extend along and hide the props 15 16 andanglebars 21 22 from view.
Other forms and constructions may be adopted without departing from my invention.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a vehicle, the seat, the top portion removably attached to said seat and the panel removably interposed between said seat and top portion. 1
2. In a vehicle, the seat, the props thereon, the seat-back mounted on the props and spaced apart from the seat and the panel removably and replaceably interposed between said seat and seat-back. k
'3. In a vehicle, the seat, the props thereon, the seat-back mounted on said props, the panel mounted between said seat and seatback, the angle-bars on said panel, the clips on the seat-back engaged by said angle-bars and means for engaging said props to said angle-bars.
4. In a vehicle, the seat, apertured clips on said. seat, apertured angle-bars registering with the apertured clips, a panel fixed to said angle-bars, atop portion of aseat-back, props on said top portion extending through the apertures of the clips and angle-bars, keys in the extremities of said props, and clips on the top portion to receive the upper ends of the angle-bars.
Signed by me at Marshalltown, Iowa, this 19th day of January, 1903.
