UNITE STATES Patented December 22,1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN VOLLMAN, OF OWENSBORO, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE VOLLMAN BUGGY. BODY COMPANY, OF OWENSBORO, KENTUCKY.
VEHICLE-BODY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0.741810, dated. December 22, 1903.
Application filed February 24, 1903. Serial No. 144,810- (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN VOLLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owensboro, in the county of Daviess and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Bodies; and I do declare the following to bea full,"clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to the manufacture of vehicle-bodies, and has for its object to provide simple, durable, and inexpensive means for securely connecting the: sides to the ends of the body and the seat-frame to the sides of the body, whereby the use of nails, screws, and like fastening means is dispensed with, thus overcoming the objectionable features incident to their use-namely, the breaking of paint around the nails or screws, and thus detracting from the appearance of the vehicle.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts,which will be hereinafter fully set forth;
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved vehicle-body, illustrating the manner of connecting the sides to the ends. Fig. 2 is a fragmental sectional view through one of the sides of the body, illustrating the dovetailed connection. of one of the seat-posts with said side. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the upper end of one of the seat-posts, illustratingthe manner of connecting one of the crosspieces of the seat-support to said post; and Fig. '4. is a vertical sectional view through one of the longitudinal side pieces of the seat- 40 support, the cross-pieces of the seat-support,
and the seat-post.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the side pieces, and 2 the end pieces, of a vehicle-body, each of which at its crossing is provided with a 5 vertical dovetailed groove 3 to receive dovetailed ribs 4, disposed at right angles to each .to receive mortised longitudinal strips 10,
which are screwed or otherwise secured in place. A vehicle-body thus constructed is strong, durable, and maybe manufactured at a greatly reduced cost and willovercome the objectionable features incident to the I construction with the use of screws, nails,
and like fastening means heretofore generally employed.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, it
. is thought, without requiring a more extended.
explanation. p
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the prinwith dovetailed faces fitting in the grooves In testimony whereof I have hereunto set of the cross-pieces, and shoulders bearing my hand in presence of two subscribing Wit- [0 under and sustaining said cross-pieces, and nesses.
longitudinal strips fitted in the said transverse mortises in the upper end edges of the JOHN VOLLMAN' cross-pieces and covering the upper ends of Witnesses:
the dovetailed portions of the posts, substan- JAS. H. PARRISI-I,
tially as described. I. N. PARRISH.
