HORSESHOE|NG-STOCK.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,974, dated December 15, 1903- Application led March l0, 1903.
To a/ZZ whom) it may concern,.-
Beit known that LMIOHAEL M. MAY,a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of Rulo, in the county of Richardson and State of Nebraska, have invented n'ewand useful Improvements in' Horseshoeing-Stcks, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
This invention relates to improvements in horseshoeing-stocks, by which the operations of paring and dressing the hoof and afiixing a shoe thereto may be expeditiously performed without exposing the operator to the danger' of being kicked by the animal, especially if it is of a vicious disposition.
Among other things my invention has for its object the provision of a stock which may be readily opened for the introduction of the animal and easily and securely closed, to provide means for securing either foot in a raised position convenient for the operator, and to provide means for sustaininga part of the animals weight when standing on three of its feet during the shoeing operation.
Further objects and advantages of the inven tion will appear in the course of the subjoined description, and the novelty will be defined by the annexed claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding partsin all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective viewol` my improved horseshoeing-stock, showing a horse in position therein for the application of a shoe to the hind foot. Fig. 2 is a view, in side elevation and on an enlarged scale, of the improved stock. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the apparatus. Fig. e is a detail sectional elevation on the line 4 et of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view illustrating means for locking the rear door. Fig-6 is a detail view in elevation showing the front of the stock and parts of the sides thereof, and Fig. 7'is a detail plan View of a sling adapted for use in connectionV with the improved stock.
The improved stock consists, primarily, of
afront member A and side members B C, the
serial No. 147,110. (No man.)
latter being connected pivotally or hingedly to the front member and ladapted to be opened outwardly and to be closed into parallel relation to each other. Any suitable means may be employed to pivotally connect the front ends of-the side membersB'C Vto the -front member A; but,v as shown more particularlyby Fig. 6, this front memberis about half the height of the side members, although said front `member may be made equal in height to the side members. This front member is provided with plates 5 and 6 at the upper andlower portions thereof, respectively, said plates being overlapped by other plates 7 S, which are fastened to the side members B C and are pivoted to said plates 5 6, as at 9. tachably to the front member by the hinged plates and by the'employment of removable pintles, thus providing for a ready disconnection of the several parts comprising the stock, to facilitate the transportation thereof, and izo-fallow the stock to be folded compactly for storage. Each member A B- C consists of suitable stiles and rails fastened together in a proper way to produce a simple substantial construction, and, as shown by Fig. 6, the front member A is provided with an elongated base a, which may be fastened by bolts to a door ofa room or shop when the stockis usedindoors. Itis evident, however, that the stock may be used out of doors, and that any suitable means may be employed for anchoring and staying the structure in its adj usted position, such as by thel anchor-rods ct in Figs. l and 2. The sides B C are provided at their lower rear portions with guards D, the latter being suspended within a suitable support on the side members, as shown more particularly by Figs. l and "2. These guards may be constructed of .wood'or other suitablev material, and when the stock is adjusted' in its closed operating position the guards are substantially parallel and partially close the sides of the stock, whereby the guards operate to' prevent the horseshoer from being kickedby the animal confined in the apparatus.
A The rear portion of the stock is partially The side members are connected delao ,an eye 18 or its equivalent.
closed by the door E. (Shown more fully by l Fig. 3 of the drawings.) This element consists of a half-door arranged at the upper rear portion of the stock, and it is hingedly and detachably connected to one of the side members of the structure-as, for example, to the member B. The door is provided near one edge and at its upper and lower portions with the hinge-plates 10, disposed in overlapping relation to corresponding hinge-plates 11, fastened to the side member B, and these hinge-plates are connected in pairs by removable pintles 12, thus providing for the desired opening and closing movement-of the door and permitting the door to be detached from the side B in folding or transporting the apparatus. This door is provided at its free upper corner with a hasp-plate 13, and the side C is provided with a keeper 14, the latter being rigidly fastened to said side member and provided with an upstanding hook 15, which is doubled or folded upon itself, as shown by Fig. 5. In connection with the haspplate and the keeper I employ a locking-rod 16, the upper end of which is bent to form a short arm 17, and the free end of this arm is connected loosely to the side members C by (See Fig. 2.) When the door is closed, the locking-rod 16 may be adjusted for its upper portion to engage with a hook on the hasp-plate 13 and for its lower portion to engage with the hook 15 on the side member C, said rod serving to hold the door E firmly in its closed position. I have provided the improved stock with means for securely holding either of the animals hoofs in a raised position convenient to the operator in performing the work on the hoof. The side members B C support or carry the levers 19, each of which is fulcrumed on the member near the front portion thereof by a bolt 2O or its equivalent. vEach lever 19 is of angular form, and the lower portion of the lever is equipped with a padded rest 2l, on which a front hoof is adapted to be placed and to be secured by a short length of rope 22 or its equivalent. A segmental locking-plate 23 is secured firmly to each side member B C, and this plate is so curved and secured in place as to be concentric with the bolt 20. The unconflned or upper portion of each lever 19 is arranged to traverse the plate, and said lever carries a locking-pin 24, which may be fitted in either of the series of apertures 25 provided inl the locking-plate, thus making provision for holding the lever in any one of the series of positions. It is evident that the lever may be adjusted to throw its lower inclined end rearwardly for the purpose of supporting the front hoof in the raised position, (indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2; but this lever'while the animals foot is attached thereto may be adjusted by moving its upper portion rearwardly, and thereby throw the lower portion of the lever in a forward direction for a corresponding distance,
thus making the foot assume the position shown by full lines in Fig. 2.
It will be understood that the side members are equipped with levers, constructed and arranged as described, for the purpose of holding and adjusting either front foot of the animal.
26 designates brackets which are secured rigidly to the side members B C at the rear ends thereof. (See Figs. 1, 2, and 3.) These brackets extend rearwardly a suitable distance from the side members, and they are provided with the padded hoof-rests 27. (Shown more particularly by Fig. 3.) Each foot-rest is provided with a rope 28 or its equivalent for the purpose of fastening the hoof securely in place'on the rest 27, whereby the rear hoof of the animal may be supported in a raised position outside of the stock, substantially as shown by Fig. 1.
The rear portion of the stock is also provided with means for raising either rear hoof of the animal, and in the embodiment of this part of the invention the rear door E of the structure is equipped with a rearwardly-extending carrier 29, from which is suspended a tackle-block 30, the latter serving as a snpport for the hoisting rope or cable 31. (See Fig. 2.) This cable may be fastened in any suitable way to a rear leg of the animal, and it may be manipulated so as to raise the hoof, after which the hoof may be placed in one of the rests 27 and secured rmly thereto by wrapping and tying the rope 2S.
Another feature of my invention consists of a sling and means for adjusting the same within the stock for the purpose of holding the animal steadily in place therein during the operation of applying the shoe to either of the hoofs. This sling is shown in detail at F by Fig. 7 of the drawings, and it consists of a body portion 32, a breast portion 33, united bya tongue 3a to the body portion, and a breeching portion 35, which is united by a tongue 36 to the rear portion of the body. The sling may be made in one piece of canvas or any other suitable material or it may be constructed in sections which are united in any approved way. The body portion of the sling is provided at its corners with short lengths of chains 37, while the breast member and the breeching member have loops 38 at their ends, said loops serving to loosely connect short lengths of chains 39 to said member at the front and rear of the sling. With the sling are associated the hoisting devices, one of which is carried by each of said members B and 'C of the stock. Each hoisting device contemplates the employment of a winding shaft or drum' 110, having one end portion journaled in. a part of the member B or C, while the other end of said shaftis journaled in a strap or bracket 41, the latter being secured firmly in anysuitable Way to the opposite portion of the side member. This shaft or drum is equipped with any suitable locking device, such as the ratchet 42, adapted to be engaged by a pivoted pawl 43, and one end portion of the shaft or drum is extended beyond the bracket 41 for the application of a crank 0r any suitable rdevice adapted to im part rotary motion to said shaft. On the inside of the member B or C is secured a loop 44, which is arranged in front of the winding-drum 40,and this loop, in connection with the upper portion of the member, supports the shaft 45 of a guide-sheave 46. A similar loop 47 is rigidly secured to the outside of said member at the upper portion thereof for the purpose of supporting the shaft 48 of another guide-sheave 49. It will be understood that the two guide-sheaves are disposedcn the inner and outer sides of the members and on opposite sides of the winding-drum, said sheaves being thus arranged out of alinement with each other. A pair of ropes, chains, or cables 50 are coiled on the Winding-drum, one of said ropes or cables extending in an upward and forward direction within the stock, so as to pass over the guide-sheave v46, while the other rope or cable passes in an upward and rearward direction to the outside of the stock and over the other guide-sheave 49. The ropes or cables on each side of the stock are provided at their ends with hooks 51 to engage with the lengths of the chain 37 on the body portion 32 of the sling, and said cables or ropes are also provided with hooks 52 53,which engage with the lengths of chains 39, attached to the breast member and the breeching member of said sling.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings it, will be understood that one or both sides of the stock may be Opened, substantially as shown by Fig. 6, for the purpose of leading the animal into the space to be iuclosed by the stock, after which the opened side member or members are closed, and the rear door E is also closed and fastened by proper adjustment of the locking-rod 16. The sling F should now be fitted to the animal for the body portion 32 to extend across and beneath the animals body, while the members 33 35 are drawn upwardly around the breast the animal, after which the hooks 51 52 of the cables 50 are connected with the chains 37 39 of the sling. The winding-drums 40 are now turned to coil the cables thereon and draw the sling snugly to the body of the animal and to partly raise said animal within the stock. If it is desired to apply a shoe to the front hoof, the proper` lever 19 is adjusted to a positionl where the animals foot may occupy the padded rest 2l, and the rope 22 is wrapped around the foot to secure it lrmly Jtothe lever. The lever, with the foot attached, may be adjusted in either a forward or rearward direction to make the foot assume a p0- sition convenient to the operator in performand rear portion of ing the work thereon. If a shoe is to be af- Xed to the rear foot, it may be raised by hand or by the employment of the hoisting mechanism, comprising the cable 31 and a block 30, after which the foot may be placed in one of the rear rests and fastened by the application of the rope 28.
Each side member B G is equipped with a cleat 54 or its equivalent, and the front member A has a ring 55. (See Figs. 2 and 6.) The lhalter has straps 56 57, which may be fastened to either side cleat 54 and to the front ring to hold the animals head in place during the shoeing operation.
