lTo ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERNE Y A,Be it known that I, STEWART McMILLAN, of Fletcher, in the county of Miami, and State of Ohio, have invented a ncwand useful Improvement in Fanning-Mills; andI do hereby declare that the followingiis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which willenablo others skilled in theart to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming` part of this specification. y
Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of my improved fanning-mill.
Figure 2 represents' a plan, with the hopper removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts.
Thisinvcntion relates tolan improvement in the construction and arrangement` of fanningmills for cleaning small grain and seeds, and consistsin building the main sdeframe of crossfbars, making it very cheap,
light, and strong, and in combining the rotary fan and the sieves in such a manner that they work with great facility, by means of a crank-movement connection, as hereinafter 4more particularlyV described.
A A are side cross-frames, the lower ends pf which form the legs of the machine, properly braced foi' the support of the fan-cylinder B, while the upper end of one of the bars ofthe frame on-each side forms the sup-l port for the front side of the hopper C.- The rotary fan D receives its motion from a pinion, a, on one end of its shaft-b, gearing into Aaspur-wlieel, a', to which a crank, c, is attached. On the opposite side of the fan. shaft 6 is `a shortcrank, s, connected with a connecting-rod, d, for giving reciprocating motion to the sieves.
This motion -is effected in a peculiar manner by a cross-piece, e, that ispivoted at one end on one side to the frame of the machine,`and is attached at the other end to the front end of the connecting-rod d, while at the middle it isfastcned to across-bar, y, on the shoe E, directly under the hopper'. Ther shoeE is suspended at opposite ends on both sidesof the machine byvstraps L 7i, which are made adjustable to raise or lower the sieves, as desired. F is'the short screen, and G-H the long screens, made movable in the shoe, so that dierent sets may beV used, coarser or finer, as may he required for separating seeds of diierent sizes. At the foot of the screensand the bottom board I, are provided-inclined cross-troughs J for catching the different kinds of-gra'ns or seeds, and conducting them into measures or receivers. In the hopper C is a shiftingeboard, k, secured by buttons in any required position, to regulate the feed more or less. The operation of the machine ist-obvious. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, andi-desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- 1. The inclined shoe E, having the screens suspended from the cross-frame A' by means of the'pivotcdV hars it, and oscillated, longitudinally from the cranks' of the fan-shaft b by'means of the short4 pivoted bnr g, crossbar e, and connecting-rod d, all constructed as described forthe purpose specified. Y i l 2. The construction and' arrangement of 'the cross-frame hopper C, oscillating pendant shoe E, boxes J J, drum B, fan D, pivoted lever e, connecting-rods g d, and crank s, as herein described for the purpose vspeci-lied.
