CALClNlNG APPARATUS.;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,067, dated November 24, 1903. Application filed January 28,1903. Serial No. 140.875. (No model.)
fo all whom, it may cm1/007%: p
Beit known that I, AMBRosE LAWRENCE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Acme, in the county of Hardeman and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Calcining Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for calcining lime or similar material, the object being to provide an apparatus for this purpose that shall be simple in construction and having a means for keeping the material in constant agitation when being operated upon.
I will describe a calcining apparatus embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a calcining apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation showing'the calcining-pan in a furnace, and Fig. e is a section on the line L 4. of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates the calcining-pan, which is designed to be airtight or closed when material is treated therein. It is provided at the top with an opening 6, through which material may be passed, and for this opening I employa cover 7. At one end of the pau is an uptake or pipe 8 for conveying away vapors. The bottom Wall 9 of the pan is inclined from the ends downward to the center, and at this central point is an outlet-opening 10, through which material may be'discharged into a spout 11. This outlet 10 is normally closed by a door 12, mounted to slide in guides 13, and from this door a rod 14. extends upward to a connection with a lever 15, by means of which the door may be closed or opened.
The pan is arranged in a furnace consisting of the brickwork 16 and a grate 17. EX- tended underneath the pan and over the grate 17 is an air-supply pipe 1S, leading from a suitable source of air-supply under pressure. From this pipe 18 branches 19 and 20 extend into the pan a short distance above the bottom thereof. These pipes 19 and 20 are closed at the ends, and extended from the pipes are subbranch tubes 21, which are closed at the ends, but perforated along the lower side, as indicated at 22. By this arrangement when lime or other material is under treatment the forced air will pass out through the perforations 22, it being understood that this air will be heated as it passes through the furnace, and thus the material Will be kept in constant agitation, preventingit from adhering to the bottom of the pan, which might cause the said bottom to burn out.
By inclining the bottom of the pan as shown it is obvious that the material will gravitate to the center, so that it may be readily removed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A calcining apparatus, consisting of a furnace, a pan arranged in the furnace and having its bottom inclined from its ends downwardly to the center, said pan being provided with a gate-controlled outlet opening in one side at its center, and with a pipe leading from its top, an air-pipe extending into the furnace beneath the pan, branch pipes leading from said pipe into opposite ends of the pan at one side thereof, said branch pipes extending along the bottom of the pan to about the center thereof and having their inner ends closed, and a series of perforated tubes projecting from each branch pipe and extending to the opposite side of the pan, said tubes having their ends closed, as set forth. 1
2. Acalciningapparatus, comprisinga furnace, a pan arranged in the furnace and having its bottom inclined from the ends downwardly toward the center, an air-pipe arranged in the furnace below the pan, branch pipes leading from said pipe into opposite ends of the pan and extending along the bottom to about the center of the pan, said pipes having their inner ends closed, and a series of tubes projecting from the branch pipes and extending to the other side of the pan, said tubes having closed ends and provided with perforations in their under sides, as set forth. Y
3. A calcining apparatus, comprisingafurnace, a pan arranged in said furnace, an air- IOO pipe extended through the furnace underneath the pan, branches leading from said pipe into opposite ends of the pan and extended along the bottom thereof, the said pipes being closed at their inner ends, and a plurality of perforated tubes extended from each of said branch pipes and across the bottom of the pan, and closed at the ends.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of ro two subscribing Witnesses.
AMBROSE LAWRENCE.
