SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 744,930, dated November 24, 1903.

To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MILTON O; MODANIEL, a'citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Holding Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bolt-holding tools, its object being to provide a tool by means of which a bolt may be held from turning While its retaining-nut is being removed.
To this end my invention consists in the features of construction and combination hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1. is a side elevation of my improved tool shown in use, and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the tool.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a straight bar provided with a handle portion 2 and a sharpened end 3. Slidable upon the bar A is a block 4. The block is formed upon its rear side with an upwardly and outwardly extending portion 5, through which is threaded a set-screw 6, the inner end of said set-screw being adapted to bear against the rear side of the bar, as shown in Fig. 1. The block 4. is formed upon its front side with a forwardly-extending log 7, upon the outer end of which lug is supported,by means of a pivot 8, a downwardly-projectin g head 9. Having swivel-support 10 in the head 9 is an arm 11, formed upon its lower end with the inwardlyprojecting hook 12. As shown in Fig. 1, the bar A passes loosely through the block A to admit of relatively lateral movement.
We will assume that it is desired to remove the nut 13 from the bolt 14, passing through the framework 15. In order to hold the bolt from turning, the tool would be arranged as shown in Fig. 1, with the hook 12 of the clamping member engaging the framework alongside the nut and the sharpened end of the bar A in engagement with the head of the bolt. The tool then being tilted rearwardly will press the hook 12 and tool end 3 firmly against their respective contacting surfaces, sliding ofthe block 4 upon the bar being prevented by the engagement of the setscrew 6 with the rear side of the bar. The bolt will thus be firmly clamped and held from turning while the nut is being removed.
The tool is designed for use in removing the nuts from bolts in plows or any other place where the head and nut of the bolt are exposed. By having the clamping-arm ll swiveled the arm can be turned to bring the hook into contact with the most convenient part of the framework adjacent to the nut, it oftentimes being impossible to position the hook exactly as shown in Fig. 1.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A tool of the class described, comprising in combination a bar, a block loosely slidable upon said bar, and a downwardly-extending clam ping-arm having both pivotal and swivel support upon one side of said block and having its free end inturned.
2. A tool of the class described, comprising in combination a bar, a block slidable upon said bar, a head having pivotal support upon one side of said block, and a depending arm having swivel-support in said head, the free end of said arm carrying clamping means oppositely disposed to the adjacent end of the bar.
3. A tool of the class described, comprising in combination a straight bar provided with a sharpened end, a block loosely slidable upon said bar, a set-screw carried by said block and engaging one side of said bar, and a depending arm having pivotal and swivel support upon the opposite side of said block, the free end of said arm carrying clamping means oppositely disposed to the sharpened end of said bar.
