PATENT @EETEE.
JAMES L. BAY, OF LINEVILLE, IOlVA.
PLOW CLEVW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,854, dated November 24, 1903.
, Application filed June 5,1903.
T aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES L. BAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lineville, in
' prises an arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, only so much of a plow being shown as will suffice to show the connection of theinvention therewith. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. Fig. A is a plan view of a portion of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5 indicates the plow-beam and 6 the plow-handles.
At 7 is indicated a horizontallydispo'sed channeled segment-beam or cross piece extending laterally at the front of the plowbeam and having ears 7 by which it is bolted, as at 7 to the plow-beam. Supported by the beam 7 and slidably mounted thereon are jaws 8, comprising two parts 8 and 8", which are bolted together, as at 8. The jaws are grooved vertically, as at 8, to form guides for a sliding draft-block 9, having a rack 9. The lower end of the draft-block extends the draft-link 10. The draft-block is held in position and adjustable vertically by a pinion 11, which engages the rack 9?. The pinion-shaft 12 extends rearwardly through a bearing-hole in the rear side of the jaws to a convenient location near the handles 6, where it has a hand-wheel 12 for rotating it. When the shaft is rotated, the pinion will raise or lower the draft-block, and thus adjust the draft-link to the desired height, and thereby regulate the depth of the furrow.
At 13 is indicated a bracket, which is secured to the plow-beam by set-screws 13" or otherwise. A tube 14 is swiveled in the bracket and forms a bearing for the shaft 12 both as a shaft and as a lever. To look the shaft against rotation, I provide a spring-ac- Serial No. 160,167. (No model.)
tuated hand-lever 15, which is pivoted near the hand-Wheel 12 ,'as at 15, to a band 15 through which the shaft 12 loosely passes. The end of the hand-lever has jaws 15, which engage a squared portion 12 of the shaft. A bar 16 extends between'the handles 6 be tween the shaft and hand-lever, forming a support for the same, on which they may slide sidewise when the shaft is used as a lever. to vary the lateral adjustment of the clevis. It is thus used to shift the jaws 8 horizontally on the beam '7 to make the plow take more or less land. The bearing-tube 14, being swiveled in its supporting-bracket, forms the fulcrum for the shaft.
The jaws 8 project over the web 7 of the beam 7, behind the flanges thereof, as at 8 and the upper projecting portion has a hole 8 adapted to register with one of a series of holes 7 in the web 7 of the beam. A pin 1'7 is secured to one end of a bell-crank lever 18, which is pivoted to a band 19, through which the shaft 12 loosely passes. This pin enters one of the holes and locks the jaws on the beam. The opposite end of the bell-crank lever is connected by a wire or rod20 to the hand-lever 15, by which the bell-crank lever is operated and the pin is withdrawn.
At 21 is indicated a spring for keeping the pin normally in engagement with the holes.
In operation to shift the clevis laterally the pin is lifted out of the hole by means of the hand-lever and connections, and the jaws 8 can then be shifted sidewise to the desired position by means of the shaft 12. To shift the clevis vertically, the draft-block 9 is raised or lowered through the rack and pinion by turning the shaft. These adjustments may be effected while the plow is in use without the removal of any bolts.
Having thus described my invention, What is claimed as new, and desiredto be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. A plow-clevis comprising jaws adjustable laterally at the front end of the plowbeam, a draft-block adjustable vertically in the jaws, and a rearwardly-extending lever engaging the block and jaws to effect said adjustments, substantially as described.
2. A plow-clevis comprising laterally-adj ustable jaws, a rack therein carryinga draftlink, a pinion engaging the rack to raise and lower the same, and a rotatable shaft extending through the jaws to the plow-handles for operating the pinion, substantially as described.
3. A plow-clevis comprising a laterally-extending support secured to the plow-beam, jaws slidable horizontally thereon, a rack in the jaws carrying a draft-link, a pinion engaging the rack to raise and lower the same, and a rotatable and laterally-swinging shaft for operating the pinion and adjusting the jaws laterally on the support, substantially as described.
4. A plow-clevis comprising a support secured to the plow-beam, jaws slidable horizontally thereon, a rack in the jaws carrying a draft-link, a pinion engaging the rack, a rotatable and laterally-swinging shaft extending through the jaws to the plow-handle and swiveled to the plow-beam, for operating JAMES L. BAY.
