SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,453, dated November` 1'7, 1903.

'To all whom t may con/cern:
Be it known that I, HUGHY PERcYvTLL AKERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Crisman, in the county of Porter and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Spreader for Oil-Burners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to railroad signallamps and the like; -and its object is to provide a new and improved spreader for oilburners which is simple and durable in construction, very economical in the use of oil, and arranged to properlyr spread the flame without causing smoke and without allowing dirt to accumulate in the spreader.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a face view of the blank for forming the spreader.
From the top of the body A of alamp-burner of any approved construction rises a wicktube B, onto which its snugly the tubular shank C of the spreader, made from a single blank sheet of metal, as shown in Fig. 4. The blank has an apertured center portion, which forms the top D of the spreader, and the ends of the center portion terminate in keystoneshaped flanges, which form the inclined sides E of the spreader and which sides extend upwardly and outwardly from the upper ends of the shank C, formed by the end pieces of the blank bent into tubular shape. From thefront and rear edges of the top D depend integral front and rear flaps F, in close proximity at their inner faces to the lower ends of the sides E (see Fig. 3) to form with the'latter and with the upper ends of the shank C openings for the ready admission of air to the burning wick at the upper end of the wicktube B. The openings referred to also permit any dirt that may get into the spreader to readily drop out of the same to the ground, fso that accumulation of dirt in the spreader is completely prevented.
The width of the opening D' in the top D is approximately equal to the diameter of the round wick used in the wick-tube B; but the said opening is elongated in the direction of the sides E to cause the iiame to-spread, and thereby produce an exceedingly bright light, especially as sufficient air passes to the burning wick to insure complete combustion, and thereby prevent smoke.
It is understood that the construction deair-admission openings between the sides E and depending iiaps F and at the upper end of the shank O, so that air readily passes to the flame to insure complete combustion and to allow any dirt that may pass into the spreader to readily drop through the openings, so as not to accumulate in the spreader.
The device can be very cheaply manufactured and readily applied to the ordinary railroad signal-lamps and the like.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new andv desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A spreader for lamp-burners, formed from a single-piece blank and having a tubuwardly from the upper ends of the shank, an apertured top connecting the sides with each other, and front and rear iiaps depending from the top, as set forth.
2. A spreader for lamp-burners, comprising a tubular shank, keystone-shaped sides extending upwardly and outwardly from the upper ends of the shank, a top connecting the sides with each other and provided with an elongated opening, and front and rear aps depending from the top, as set forth.
8. Aspreader for lamp-burners, comprising a tubular shank, keystone-shaped sides extending upwardly and outwardly from the lar shank, sides extending upwardly and out-A scribed forms a cup-shaped spreader having upper ends of the shank, a top connecting name to this specification in the presence of the sides with each other and provided with two subscribing Witnesses.
