Be it known that I, JOHN J. HENNEssEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Milwaukee, in the cou nty'of Milwaukee and State v of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Friction Draft-Rigging for Railroad-Gars, of which the following i a specification. l
My invention relates to friction draft-rigging for railway-cars.
The object of my invention is to simplify the construction and increase the strength, durability, and efficiency in operation of the friction draft-rigging heretofore patented to mein Letters Patent Nos. 687,826, 700,422, 702,426, 708,850, 716,415, 716,416, 717,676, 717,677, 717,678, and 717,679.
My invention consists, in connection with a draw-bar and draft-iron or extension inline therewith having a straight friction-face on one side and a plurality of double-incline friction-faces on itsopposite side, of a single transversely or vertically movable frictionblock having a plurality of double-incline friction-faces engaging the double-incline friction faces on the draft-iron, a transversely-arranged spring acting against said friction-block, and a pair of side plates' or stop-castings secured to and between the" draft-timbers or center sills of the car and provided with integral horizontally-extending wings or extensions, anda friction plate 'or surface engaging the straight friction-face of the draft-iron, the friction-block having on its side vertically-extending` ribs or guides engaging corresponding ribs or guides on the side plates or stop-castings.
My invention also consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown or described.

In the drawings, A represents the drafttimbers; A', the center sills; A2, the crosssills 5A A3, the buffer-block; A4, the bufferplate, and A5the'carry-iron, and B is the draw-bar of the coupler B, these parts being all of any suitable construction. D is the sliding draw-bar extension or draft-iron, the same beingndirectly in line with the draw-bar and connected thereto by a clip or yoke b, passing through an eye d in the draw-bar eX- tension or draft-iron. The frictionplate G is preferably made in a separate piece from the stopcastings F or their wings F. The stop-castings F are also provided with upright guides or ribs f2, which engage corresponding ribs or guides h on the transversely or vertically movable friction-block H. The horizontally-projecting wings F of the stop castings F haveupright abutting flanges f3, secured together vby rivets f4 and interengaging grooves'and tongues f 5 f, which thus rigidly secure the two stop-castings together, and thereby add materially to the strength and rigidity of the draft-rigging as a whole.
The vertically or transversely movable friction-block II is provided with a plurality, preferably two, double-incline friction-faces IOO h' h2 71.' h2, corresponding to and fitting against the double-incline friction-faces cl2 (Z3 and d2 d3 on the draft-iron D. The friction-block H has a central rim or flange 71,3 on its opposite or lower side to receive and form a seat for the transversely-acting spring K, which is supported at its lower end in a removable spring-seat or cup K', which is removably secured to the downwardly-extending projections F2 of the side plates or stop-castings F by bolts K3 having keys Kl. The spring-seat or cup K has flanges K5 at its front and rear ends, which embrace the ends of the transversely-movable friction-block H, as will be readily understood from Fig. l of thedrawin gs. As the draft-iron D and friction-block H both have a plurality of double-incline frictionfaces and as the transversely-acting spring K bears centrally against the friction-block or midway between its ends, although but a single spring is employed, all tendency of the friction-block to tilt or cant, and consequently bind in its guides on the side plates or stopcastings, is effectually prevented or overcome, while at the same time the friction-surfaces are materially increased in area over what they would be if but a single pair of incline friction-faces (Z2 cl3 71,' 72,2 were employed, and the durability of the draft-rigging is thus materially increased and its construction simplied.
The side plates or stop-castings F F have shoulders or stops fl for the stop-'shoulders di on the draft-iron to abut against.
The side plates orstop-castings F have each, preferably, a series of three upright guides or ribs f2 for the friction-block, which engage a corresponding series of upright guides or ribs h on the friction-block. This materially increases the bearing area and face of the transversely-movable friction-block on theside plates or stop-castings and materially adds to the strength and durability of the draft-rigging as a whole, there heilig four guide shoulders or faces f2 on the side plates or stop-castings fitting against four corresponding guide shoulders or faces t on the friction-block H.
I claiml. In a friction draft-rigging. for railwaycars, the combination with the draw-bar, of a draft-iron in line therewith having a straight friction-faceon one side and a plurality of double-incline friction-faces on its opposite side, a transversely-movable friction-block having a plurality of double-incline frictionfaces engaging the double-incline frictionfaces on the draft-iron, and a transverselyarranged spring bearing against said frictionblock, substantially as specified.
2. In a friction draft-rigging for railwaycars, the combination with the draw-bar, of a draft-iron in line therewith having a straight friction-face on one side and a plurality of double-incline friction-faces on its opposite side, a transversely-movable friction-block having a plurality of double-incline frictionfaces engaging the double-incline frictionfaces on the draft-iron, a transversely-arranged spring bearing against said frictionblock, a pair of side plates or stop-castings and a stationary friction-plate engaging the straight friction-face of the draft-iron, substantially as specified.
3. In a friction draft-rigging for railwaycars, the combination with the draw-bar, of a draft-iron in line therewith having a straight friction-face on one side and a plurality of double-incline friction-faces on its opposite side, a transversely-movable friction-block' having a plurality of double-incline frictionfaces engaging the double-incline frictionfaces on the draft-iron, a transversely-arranged spring bearing against said frictionblock, and a pair of side plates or stop-castings furnished with a series of ribs 0r guides for said friction-block said friction-block having also a series of ribs or guides on each of its sides engaging the corresponding ribs or guides on the side plates or stop-castings, substantially as specified.
