BRAKE-BEAM.

To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I,- ARTHUR LIPSCHUTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Beams, of which the following is a full, clear, and-exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to the fulcrum and the manner of attaching it to the beam, the object being to provide a construction whereby a fulcrum (which in itself is inexpensive) can be readily and quickly attached to the beam without the use of special tools and which when attached is securely and firmly held in position.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a perspective view illustrative of my invention, a portion only of the body of the beam being shown. Fig. II is a perspective view of one of the filler-blocks. Fig. III is a diagrammatic view showing the manner of placing the fulcrum in position on the beam. Fig. IV shows a modification.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a portion of the body of a brake-beam. This I have shown of I-beam form, although I do not wish to be limited to this particular shape for the body of the beam.
2 represents the fulcrum and the usual jaws 3, between which the brake lever is adapted to be pivoted. fulcrum has an upper arm 5 anda lower arm 6, these arms being preferably formed on a slight inclination from the horizontal, as shown in Fig. III, so as to better grip the filler-blocks and have less tendency to slip therefrom. The ends of the arms have inturned lips 7, and the arms are perforated to receive a bolt or rivet 8.
9 represents filler-blocks having heads 10, adapted to t against the inner faces of the arms 5 and 6 and which occupy the space between the flange 11 of the body of the brakebeam and the inturned lips 7 ofthe arms. The ller-blocks have hubs 12 and wings 13,

In attaching the fulcrum to the beam it is edged over the iiange 11, as shown by dotted .lines in Fig. III, and when its head It is brought up against the back of the fiange 11 the filler-blocks 9 are slipped into position and the bolt or rivet 8 then applied by Aslipping it through the 'holes in the arms and through holes formed in the filler-blocks and in the web of the beam, the attachment thus being made without removing the brakeshoe heads`and without the use of special tools, and when the fulcrum is in position it is firmly and securely held from movement.
In Fig. IV I have shown a modification in which a single filler-block 9iL is used, it being illustrated in position between the fulcrumarm 5a and the web 14:n of the brake-beam. In this construction the second fulcrum-arm 6a is made short and turned directly onto the flange 11a of the beam instead of being cont-inued into a length corresponding to that of the arm 5a. The bolt 8a passes only through the one long arm 5a,the single filler-block, and the web of the beam, thereby holding the parts rmly together without the presence of the second fulcrum-arm and filler-block between it and the web of the beam.
' I claim as my invention- 1. A brake-beam'body in combination with a fulcrum having a head provided with an' arm, a filler-block fitting between the arm and the web of the beam, and a' bolt or rivet passing through said arm, filler-block and web, substantially as set forth.
2. A brake-beam body in combination with a fulcrum having a head providedwith arms, fillerblocks fitting between the arms and the web of the beam, and a bolt or rivet passing through said arms, filler-blocks and web, substantially as set forth.
3. A brake-beam body in combination with a fulcrum having inclined arms, filler-blocks located between the arms and the web of the beam, and a bolt or rivet adapted to be passed through saidl arms, filler-blocks and web, substantially as set forth.
4. A brake-beam body in combination with a fulcrum having an arm provided with inturned lips, filler-blocks located between the arms and the Web of the beam, and a bolt or rivet adapted to pass through said arms, fillerblocks and web, substantially as setforth.
5. A brake-beam body in combination with a fulcrum having a head adapted to fit against the outer face of the beam, inwardly-extend ing arms projecting from the head and nclined toward each other and having lips on their inner ends, illerblocks located between the arms and the Web of the beam, and a bolt or rivet adapted to pass through said arms,
