MOP-HEAD.

To all whmn it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES MORGAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop-Heads, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mops; and its object is to produce a mop of the type wherein a yielding pressure is maintained between the bail and the cross-head, so as to accommodate swabs of various sizes.

I have endeavored to produce a mop which shall be extremely simple and cheap and which shall, in addition, present a handsome appearance.

To these and certain minor ends my invention consists in the novel features of construction shown in the accompanying drawings and described in this specification.

In the above-mentioned drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of my improved mop. Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section in the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, but showing certain parts in a different position.

Referring to the drawings, A is a stick or handle upon which the mop is mounted.

Upon the end of the handle A is mounted a sleeve or ferrule B, preferably of sheet metal and preferably of the same internal diameter as the diameter of handle A. Within the sleeve or ferrule B is a coiled spring 0, one

5 end of which is secured to the ferruleas, for

instance, bya pin 12 passing through two adjacent coils of the spring and through the ferrule-and this spring O exerts an ordinary spring-pressure away from the end of the handle A. lVithin the ferrule B and secured to the spring O is a tubular member a, forming an integral part of the cross-head A of the mop. The cross-head is grooved, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, as are the ordinary cross- 5 heads of mops. To the handle A, immediately beyond the ferrule B,is secured a bracket 8, which projects laterally from the handle and supports a lever E upon a suitable pivot. The lever E has two laterally-projecting gud- 5o geons e e, which are surrounded by and secured to suitable eyes d d, formed by the recurving of the sides of the mop-head bail D. As shown, these gudgeons are formed by passing a pin or Wire through the lever E and allowing it to project slightly from the sides thereof. This bail is of the ordinary form and fits within the groove in the cross-head A, and it is guided with respect to said crosshead by two notches a a on the cross-head.

It will be seen that when the parts of the mop-head are in the position shown in Fig.

1 the spring O presses the cross-head A yieldingly against the bail D. When, however, the lever is thrown toward the cross-head, the latter is moved bodily away from the position shown in Fig. 2 by the spring O, and

as soon as the limit of expansion of the spring has been reached the bail is moved from the cross-head, permitting the insertion of a suitable swab. It will be seen in Fig. 2 that when the mop is closed from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Figs.

1 and2 the line of pull upon the gudgeons e e of the lever passes the fulcrum of the lever, so that when the mop is closed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the lever is locked shut and the mop cannot he accidentally opened.

It is to be noted that the spring 0 is secured at one end to the ferrule B and. at the other end to the cross-head A. This, it is 8b evident, forms a stop to prevent continued motion of the cross-head A away from the handle A. It is evident that various other stops might be substituted for this form; but I consider this form particularly simple and desirable.

I realize that considerable changes can be made in the details of this construction, and I do not, therefore, desire to limit myself to the specific form herein shown. 7

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- -1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a mop-stick, of a cross-head supported thereby and capable of longitu- 5 dinal movement with respect thereto, means for exerting a yielding pressure upon said cross-head away from said handle, a bail extending over said cross-head, and means for drawing said bail toward said handle, sub- 10o stantially as described.

2. In a device of the class described, the

combination with a handle, of a cross-head supported thereby and movable with respect thereto, a springinterposed between said handle and cross-head and exerting pressure upon said cross-head away from said handle, a bail extending over said cross-head and means for drawing said bail toward said handle, substantially as described.

3. In a device of the class described, the

combination with a handle, of a cross-head supported thereby and movable with respect thereto, a spring interposed between said handle and cross-head and exerting pressure upon said cross-head, a bail extending over said cross-head and means for drawing said bail toward said cross-head and looking it in place, substantially as described.

4:. In a device of the class described, the combination with a handle, of a cross-head supported thereby and movable with respect thereto, a spring interposed between said handle and said cross-head, a bail extending over said cross-head and a lever adapted to draw said bail toward said handle, substantially as described.

5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a handle, of a cross-head supported thereby and movable with respect thereto, a spring interposed between said handle and said cross-head, a bail running over said cross-head, and a lever secured to said bail and adapted to exert pressure upon it toward said handle, whereby said bail is drawn toward said handle against the force of said spring and locked in place, substantially as described.

6. In a device of the class described, the combination with a handle, of a cross-head supported thereby and movable with respect thereto, means for producing a yielding pressure upon said cross-head away from said handle, a bail running over said cross-head, a laterally-extending bracket upon said handle, and a lever fulcrumed upon said bracket and connected to said bail whereby when said lever is forced toward said handle, said bail may be drawn toward said handle and locked in place, substantially as described.

7. In a device of the class described, the combination wit-l1 a handle, a cross-head supported thereby and capable of longitudinal movement with respect thereto, said crosshead being yieldingly spring-pressed away from said handle, a bail running over said cross-head, and means for drawing said bail toward said handle and looking it in place, of means for limiting the movement of said cross-head away from said handle, substantially as described.
