TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I
Be it known that I, GRANDISON F. MARKS, of Petersburg, in the county of Dinwiddie, in the State of Virginia, have invented a new and improved Mode of Constructing Mill-Shapes or Moulds for Manufacturing Tobacco; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accomp'anying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichi Figure 1 represents a section through the sinkers or followers, showing the metal plate, to which the series of sinkers is attached, they having plate-metal faces, which are secured by rivets through the whole.
Figure 2 shows an under side view of the mill-shapes, or a series of iron moulds, with the end view of the .sinkers.
Figure 3 is a view, in section,- of a series of the moulds.
The object of my invention is to make mill-shapes or moulds for manufacturing pressed tobacco, so that they will be permanent and durable, easily washed off, and capable of manufacturinght least one-third more tobacco in a given time than others known and used.
My invention consists in making the top plates of iron, or other suitable metal, to which the sinkers or followers are secured by rivets, passing through the whole.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawings,
and to the letters marked thereon. v With my improved mode of constructing mill-shapes for pressing tobacco into plugs, one-quarter or one- -third more moulds can be used in a given space; the partitions and divisions, a a a a, being made of fiat bars of iron, or other suitable metal, of the required width, to receive a suflicient quantity of the leaf to form the plugs. To form the followers or sinkers, B B B B, I use a plate of iron, A, of the required size, to fit the press, one-fourth of an inch in thickness, more or less, as may be required. To the plate A, I secure the sinkers B B B B, with two or more strong rivets C C C 0 each, they being placed on the plate A, so as to nicely fit into the matrices D D D D, of the iron mould, the ends of the sinkers being plates of metal, e e e e, of the same thickness as the plate A, with the holes for the rivets countersunk sufficiently to hold them firmly together, and allow the ends of the rivets to be ground ofi' level with the plates, so that they leave no mark 01 indentation on the tobacco to deface it.
The advantages ofmy invention, as above described, are, that one-fourth more sets of moulds and sinker can be placed in the hydraulic press at each pressing than there can be used by the mill-shapes constructedii the ordinary manner, thereby mak-ing a. clear gainin the time and labor-saving of at least twenty-five per cent over the ordinary method of constructing the moulds. 7
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
llhe iron plate A, or other metal, of suitable thickness, and securing the same to the followers or'sinkei B B, and the plates 0 e e, with strong rivets C C C, for the construction of mill-shapes or moulds for. manufa tur'ing tobacco, substantially as herein set forth.
G. F. MARKS.
