TO ALL WHOM- IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it knownthat I, W. W. BEEBEE, of Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque, and Statey of Iowa, have `invented a new and improved Attachment for Harnesses; and I do hereby declare that'the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in theart to make and use the same, refer.
ence being'had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
.The present invention relates to.A an attachment for eitherfsingle or double harnesses, the object of which is .to overcome and cure all inclination in a horse to b e baulky when driven, whether such horse is in single or double harness. In the accompanying plate of drawingsmyimproved attachmontfor harnesses is illustrated- :Eliguresl` and 2 being views of the same detached, andv i A Figure 3 a View showing it as applied to a double harness.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A, in the drawings, represents my improved attachment, which consists of a stick or rod ofl wood, or other stiff material, B, that, for a portion of its 1ength,and at one end, C, iscurved in thc-direction of its length, and, at theextrerne point or outer end o fvsuch curved portion, grooved orotherwise prepared for receiving afstrap, rope, or other line. A j'- v In ther-use of my improved attachment,` it is to be fastened to the truel or faithful horse, as for convenience I will designate the one, by inserting the rod or stick from'the front into a common thill-strap, closely fitting, and being-soorotherwiseA attached to theside buckle of the harness, atthe usual place for such straps, when, with another thill orother straps, irmlyfas'ten the forward-projecting part to the hamesor collar, ,and near or Ajust below neckfyoke strapring, rwithlthe bowing end of stick, about a foot ormore in front of BaulkyfY Now take a stout but pliable` strap or rope, with snapfhook or other fixture on its e'nd; pass the end with hook, vSrc., through the rst bit-ring` of Baulkys common-joint bridle-bit, thcn through the other bit-ring, then'baclr and hook .it into first bit-ring, thus or 'othe'rwise fastening securely to Baulky's under jaw. Now fasten the other endof .the same strap or rope safely nea-r to the tip end of the stick, leaving it with a length of fifteen el, Y, inchesrmore or less, from the bit totheend of stick. A common bitching-lino is now t'ed'to the bau'lkyhorse,v by the bit, 4and tothe' side buckle'ofthe true horse, leaving about one foot or more `playto the baulky. horseyto prevent his'plunging too far forward when the attachment islready, and, by the action of :the fast-andLloose bit and strap vor rope'upon the under jaw of the baulky horse, iit soon re'duces him to the conditionklesiredand necessary for driving him. Y f v i v p Whenfmy attachment is to be used for a single horse, it is made longer and lighter than for-two horses, and is flattened to tit snugly upon upper side of right shaft of buggy, with two staples so attached to the 'instrument that'one shall be near the back4 end, and one just forward of the usual holdbacl( iron, onthc under side'of `the shaft. Corresponding staples are put upon the under side of the shaft, and `the straps are put aroundat each place, andare tightly drawn and buckled. This places the point of the attachment about one foot before the horses head. A little pulley is setin or nearlth'e end, and a line from the horscs bridle, attached as in the twohorse plan, passes through the instrument and around the pulley, and back through the rings or terrcts, and back to the buggy; and there it is so attached to the dash, or forward pie'ce below thedash, that, with a little lever with a pulley in it, one-third'distance from the bottom end of lever, it shall shorten the rein double the distance that the lever is drawn at that point, the lever to be'easily reached, and drawn back like one on a mowingmachine. Y I
This is only designed for horses easily managed, and for those already trained by a few good lessons beside a true horse- In the latter case, this fixture will be a complete and sufficient reminder. 4But, for a headstrong, baulky horse, at the outset, one will need the aid of a good and true horse to keep him controlled, and from dangerous plungings and side-turnings.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An attachment for harnesses, substantially as and for the purpose described.
