PATENT OFFICE.
CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,550, dated June 30, 1903.
Application filed May 12, 1902. Serial No. 106,992. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN G. I-IALLSTROM,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in chairs, and refers particularly to a chair which can be adjusted to form a recliningchair or which may be converted into a table.
The object of my invention is the provision of a chair of ornamental and attractive appearance which will perform the functions of a reclining-chair or a table in a perfect mannerv and which will be inexpensive of production and entirely practical.
To attain the desired object, my invention consists of a chair embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my chair with parts in position to provide a reclining-chair. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view, the parts being in position to form a table. Fig. 3 represents a transverse sectional view'particularly illustrating the construction of the foot-rest and connections. Fig. 4 represents a detail view of a portion of the back and seat with hinge connections. Fig. 5 represents a detail view of one of the spring-catches for engaging the seat to hold the seat at proper place. Fig. 6 represents a detail view of one of the pivots for the back of the chair.
In the drawings the letterAdesignates the four legs which support the side and end rails forming the rectangular frame B. 111
the side rails, on the inner faces, are provided.
bearings O for the journals D on the shaft E, to which shaft is connected the yoke F, and to the center of said yoke is secured the inner end of the arm G, which has its outer end secured to the'foot rest or support H. From this construction it will be seen that the yoke can be swung out to allow the footrest to be adjusted to support the feet of the person occupying the chair, and when the rest is not needed it can be moved back under the 'right-angle-shaped plates Q, said right-angled plates having their horizontal arm secured at R to the seat S, which. consists of a fiat support resting on the rectangular frame, and the seat has a plate or plates T on the side provided with the openings U, which are engaged by the spring-catches V and which hold the seat when the back is adjusted to form a reclining-chair.
When desired to use my invention as a table, the back is simply dropped down and rests upon the stops and the .parts assume the position shown, making a perfect table. To adjust the chair to make a reclining-chair, the seat is moved to proper place and held by the catch and the back is given the proper incline.
The'slotted right-angle plates accommodate.
the movement of the back with reference to the seat in forming a chair or table.
'ance, strong and durable, inexpensive, and
practical in every particular.
I claim I 1. A chair, consisting of the legs, the frame mounted in the legs, the seat movable in the frame, the catch for holding the seat at de= sired adjustment, the back pivoted to the legs, and the slotted angle-plates connecting the back to the seat.
2. A chair, consisting of the legs, the frame mounted in the legs, the seat mounted for e movement in the frame, the catch for holdsaid stops to fonnatable, and the seat having ing the seat at proper adjustment, and the a sliding hinge connection with the hack. I0 back having a sliding connection with the In testimony whereof I affix my signature seat and pivoted to the legs and the stops for in presence of two Witnesses.
5 the back when forming, a table. 1 JOHN G. HALLSTROM.
A chair, composed of the legs, the arms Vitnesses:
mounted on the legs, the stops on the M3115, VERNELLE WV. HATCH, the back hinged to the legs and limited by MYRTLE ABEL.
