CLUTCH AND BRAKE OPERATING MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 731,683, dated June 23, 1903.

To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBURTIS C. I-IILSINGER, of Boston, in the countyof Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clutch and Brake Operating Mechanisms, of which the following, taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to clutch and brake operating mechanisms; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrange ment, and combination of parts, which will be readily understoodby' reference to the description of the accompanying drawings and I 5 to the claims hereto appended and in which the invention is clearly pointed out.
This invention is especially designed for use on paper-cuttingmachines, but is equally applicable to other machines in which the ey cle of operations are intermittent with a period of rest after each operation.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevation of so much of an intermittently-operating machine as is necessary to illustrate the invention. Fig. 2 isa partial sectional side elevation of the same looking toward the right of said figure with the clutch-pulley removed, and Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a side elevation and an end view of the ship- 0 per rod and fork and the lever for operating the same.
In the drawings, 1 represents the right-hand side frame of themachine, the left-hand frame (not shown in Fig.- 1) being located at a suitable distance to the left thereof, according to the width of machine required.
2 is the driving-shaft, mounted in suitable bearings on said frames and having loosely mounted on one end thereof outside of said 0 frame the clutch-pulley 3,- constructed and arranged to be secured firmly to said shaft byfriction in any well-known manner.
. 4 is the shipper-hub, provided with the circumferential rectangular groove 5 to receive am bifurcated end of the shipper-fork 6,
formed upon or secured to the shipper-rod 7, mounted in abearing on the frame 1, so as to be movable endwise therein and provided with a rectangular slot 8, cut vertically through its inner end to receive the lower or I movable end of the lever 9, firmly secured on the shaft 10, which has its hearings. on the front and rear portions of the frame, as shown at 11 and 12.
The shaft 2 has secured thereon between the side frames the pinion 13, which engages and imparts motion to the gear-wheel 14, firmly' secured on the shaft 15, mounted in suitable bearings on the side frames 1 in a position parallel to the shaft 2, on which is also mountedth-e pinion 16, which engages with and imparts motion to the gear-wheel 17, firmly secured on the shaft 18, also arranged parallel to the shafts 2 and 15 and mounted in bearings on the frames 1.
The shafts 2 and 15 have mounted thereon the yoke-like stand 19, which is provided with an arm 20, which is firmly bolted to the tie 21 of the rear portion of the frame, as shown in Fig. 2. The yoke 19 is located near the -middle of the length of said shafts, and said shafts revolve freely in bearings therein, the hubs of said yoke-like stand contacting on one side with the hub of the gear-Wheel 14 on the shaft 15 and the pinion 13 on the shaft 2 .and on the other side with the hub of the brake-drum 22, firmly secured on the shaft 2, and the two-armed lever 23, mounted loosely on the shaft 15, the hub of said lever 23 contacting with the collar 24, firmly secured to said shaft 15, as shown in Fig. 1. The stand 19 has pivoted thereto at b the lever 25, the upper end of which is adjustably attached, by means of the screw-shank 26 and nuts 27, on one end of the brake-strap 28, the other end of which, after passing over the brake-drum 22, is bolted to the ear or lug 29, formed on the stand 19, as shown in Fig.2.
The lower end of the lever 25 has pivoted thereto one end of the link 30, the other end of which is pivoted to the short arm 31 of the two-armed lever 23, the other arm of said lever being pivoted to the lower end of the link 32, the upper end of which is pivoted to the movable end of the lever 33, which is firmly 5 secured upon the shaft 10.
I The front end of the shaft 10 has firmly secured thereon the arm 34:, the rear side of which is ribbed, the upper ends of said ribs forming ears 35, to which is pivoted the lever mo 36, provided at its upper end with the handle 37 and pivoted at its lower end to one end of the rod 38, the other end of which is screwed into the short arm of the lever 39, the long arm of which is forked and has mounted on a suitable pivot set in said fork a truck 40, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
I The lever 39 is mounted on the shaft 10 and secured thereto by means of a spline groove and key,so as to be non-revoluble,but movable endwise thereon, and is normally pressed into contact witlrthe bearing ll by the tension of the spring 41, which surrounds the shaft 10 between the hub of said lever and the collar 42, which is firmly secured on said shaft in a fixed position, as shown in Fig. 2.
The greater part of the shaft 18 is broken away at ct in order to the more clearly show parts of the machine that would otherwise be hid thereby.
The gear-wheel 17 has formed upon or secured to its left side the cam-segment 43, which when the lever 39 is in its normal position engages the truck 40 to break the contact of the friction-surfaces of the clutchpulley 3.
44 represents a portion of the table or bed of a paper-cutting machine.
In Fig. 1 only one of the side frames and none of the front and rear tie-girths are shown, as they are unnecessary to the proper understanding of this invention, and in Fig. 2 a
considerable portion of the right-hand side frame is broken away to render the essential parts of this invention the more clearly visible.
The operation of this invention is as follows: The several parts of the invention are shown in the drawings in the positions they occupy when in a state of rest, the frictiongrip on the clutch-pulley being released, so that said pulley may revolve freely on its shaft without movingany other portion of the machine, said parts being locked in said stationary positions by the action of the cam-segment 43 on the truck 40, as shown in Fig. 1. When it is desired to set the machine in operation, the operatorseizes the handle 37 and moves the upperportion of the lever 36 toward the front of the machine, which causes a rearward movement of the lever 39 to move the truck 40 out of the path of the cam-segment 43 and then moves the said lever, with the arm 34, toward the left of Fig. 1 to partially rotate the shaft 10 in the direction indicated by the arrow 0.
on Fig. 1, which partial rotation of said shaft causes a downward movement of the movable end of the lever 33, which, acting through the link 32, the two-armed lever 23, the link 30, and thelever 25, releases the grip of the brake-strap 28 upon the brake-drum 22 and also moves the lower end of the lever 9 toward the right of Fig. 1, thereby moving the shipper-rod 7, the fork 6, and the shipperhub 4 in the same direction to cause the engagement of the two parts of the friction-pulley by which the machine is operated. As soon as the engagement of the parts of the friction-pulleyis assured the operator releasesthe lever 36, when the reaction of the spring 41 returns the lever 39 and truck 40 to their normal positions, with said truck in the path of rotation of the segmental cam 43, which when the gear-wheel 17 has nearly completed a revolution comes in contactwith said truck 40 and moves lever 39, the shaft 10, the levers 33, 23, 25, and 9, the shipper rod and fork, the shipper hub '4, and the brake-strap 28 into their normal positions, when the friction grip will have been removed from the driving pulley and the brake-strap will have been broughtinto firm contact with the periphery of the brake-drum, and the operation of the machine will thereby be arrested.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a clutch and brake operating mechanism, the combination of a driving-shaft; a friction clutch pulley and a shipperhub mounted thereon; the shafts 15 and 18 arranged parallel to each other and to said driving-shaft; a train of gearing connecting said three shafts; the shaft 10 located in a vertical plane at right angles to the axes of said other shafts; an operating-lever made in two parts pivoted together and firmly secured on said shaft 10; the lever 39 splined to said shaft 10 so as to be movable endwise thereon; a spring arranged to press said lever 39 toward the front of the machine; a rod connecting said lever 39 with the lower end of the upper portion of said hand-lever; a truck carried by said lever 39; the lever 9 secured on said shaft 10, and engaging, by its movable end, the shipper-rod; the shipper-fork carried by said rod and engaging the circumferential groove in the shipper-hub; and the segmental cam 43 carried by the shaft 16 and arranged to engage the truck 40 to separate the friction-surfaces of the clutch-pulley.
2. In a clutch and brake operating mechanism, the combination of a driving-shaft; a friction clutch-pulley and a shipper hub mounted thereon; the shafts 15 and 18 arranged parallel to each other and to said driving-shaft; a train of gearing connecting said three shafts; the shaft 10 located in a vertical plane at right angles to the axes of said other shafts; an operating-lever made in two parts pivoted together and firmly secured on said shaft 10; the lever 39 splined on said shaft 10 so as to be movable endwise thereof; a rod connecting said lever 39 with the lower end of the upper portion of said operatingmechanism connecting the other end of said brake-strap with the movable end of the lever 33; a combined shipper rod and fork connected at one end to the movable end of the lever 9, and at theother end tothe shipperhub; whereby a partial movement of the shaft 10 about its axis in one direction will cause the release of the grip of the brakestrap upon its drum, and at the same time cause the engagement of the friction-surfaces of theolutch-pulley to set the machine in motion, anda similar motion of said shaft in the opposite direction will cause the reverse action of said brake and clutch; a spring arranged tomove said lever 39 toward the front ofthemachine, or into its normal or operative position; and a cam carried by the shaft 15 construotedand' arranged to act upon the truck 40to movethe lever 39 and the shaft 10 about the axis'of said shaft, when said lever 39 is in its normal position, to separate the friction-surfaces of the clutch-pulley, and apply the friction-bra'keto stop the machine.
3. In a clutch and brake operating mechanism, the combination of adriving-shaft; means for imparting intermittentrotations thereto the brake-drum 22 secured thereon;
the brake-strap 28; the shafts 10, 15, and 18; the lever 33 mounted on shaft 10, the twoarmed lever 23, mounted on shaft 15; the link 32 connecting the levers 23 and 33; the stand 19 supported in a fixed position on the shafts 2 and 15 and the tie-girth 21; the lever 25 pivabout its axis in the opposite direction toarrest the motion of the machine."
