Description

PATENTED JUNE 23, 1903 J. P. MOLLOY. V SUSPENDER BUCKLE. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 23. 1903.
10 MODEL pummwm, wax-(mama D c arm adapted to press a portion-of the web.

ATFNT FFICE.
JAMES F. MOLLOY, OF WESTHAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
"SUSPENDER BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 731, dated June 1903- Application filedMarch 23, 1903. Serial No. 149,113; (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES F. MOLLOY, of Westhaven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Suspender-Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a front view of a portion of a suspender-web, showing my improved buckle applied thereto; Fig. 2, a side view of the same; Fig. 3, a rear view of the buckle detached; Fig. at, a front view of the buckle detached, on an enlarged scale and partially in section; Fig. 5, a side view of the lever member detached; Fig. 6, a sectional view of the bar, showing one of the ends in side elevation. Figs. '7, 8, and 9 illustrate modifications in the manner of connecting the bar and lever members.
This invention relates to an improvement in suspender buckles, and particularly to buckles consisting solely of two members, one member in the form of a bar to which one end of the suspender-web may be attached, said bar provided with ends which are turned rearward and incline upward, which ends support a lever member which is provided with an operating-arm and with a clampingpassing between the bar and the lever against a portion of the web which is secured to the said bar, the object of the invention being a simple construction which will be flat when applied to a web; and it consists in details of construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
As herein shown, the buckle consists of two members, one comprising a bar A, preferably formed from sheet metal, with inclined ends B B, which are turned upward in planes at right angles to the barA, and preferably the upper portions of the ends are formed with sockets O. The lever member D is formed with lugs or projections E, adapted to enter the socket 0, whereby the lever memher is pivotally connected with the ends B. The lever member has two arms arranged at an angle, one, a clamping-arm F, having teeth or projections G and the other an operating-arm H. One end of the web J is folded over and secured around the bar A, from which the web extends downward through the usual loop K and thence between the bar A and the lever member, which when turned downward forces the portion of the web which extends upward between the lever and bar toward that portion, of the web which is looped over and secured to the said bar.
Instead of forming the upper portions of the ends B with sockets G, the ends may be formed with ears L, adapted to be turned inward, as shown in Fig. 7, and the lever member instead of being formed with lugs E will be formed with fingers M, adapted to be turned about the ears L, so as to pivotally securethe lever member to the ends 13.
Having fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
1. A buckle consisting solely of two members, one member comprising a bar having ends turned at right angles thereto and inclined upwardly and rearwardly therefrom, a lever member pivotally connected with the upper portions of said, ends above the said bar and comprising an operating-arm and a clamping-arm, in combination with a web having one end secured to said bar, another portion of the web extending upward between .the bar and lever member, the clamping-arm of the lever being so proportioned and disposed as to press the web which passes between the bar and the lever member toward the upper edge of the bar and that portion of the web which is secured to said bar.
2. A buckle consisting solely of two members, one member inthe form of a bar having inclined ends turned at right angles thereto and extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom, said ends formedwith sockets in their upper portions above the saidbargthe other a lever member having lugs extending into said sockets and having two arms at an angle with each other, one a clamping-arm, the other an operating-arm, in combination with a web secured to said bar, one portion the bar, substantially as described.
of the web passing between the bar and le- I In testimony whereof I have signed this ver, the clamping-arm of the lever being so specification in the presence of two subscribproportioned and disposed as to press the ing witnesses.
web which passes between the bar and the lever toward the upper edge of the bar and that portion of the web which is attached to J AS. F. MOLLOY;
