Be it known that I, WILLIAM IIAUSSER- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crookston, in the county of Polk and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candlesticks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in Candlesticks; and it consists in the peculiar construction. and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

One object of my invention is to provide an improved handle whereby when the candlestick is being moved or carried about the same will remain in a perpendicular position irrespective of the position or inclination of the handle, and thereby preventing the dropping of unconsumed grease froln the candle.

A further object of my invention is to pro- 'vide means for automatically feeding the candle as the same is consumed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a candle- Fig. 2 is a detailed sectional view, on a larger scale, showing the construction of the detachable cap and the handle which is connected thereto for universal angular movement.

In the embodiment of my invention here shown -I provide a tubular holder l for the candle a, the lower end of the said tubular lholder being provided with a suitable base 2,

which may consist of radially-disposed feet, as here shown, or be `of any other suitable construction. In the lower portion of the tubular holder is a candle-feeding spring 3, which is here shown as a coiled eXtensile spring, the upper end of which bears under the lower end of the candle, the said spring serving to move the candle upwardly in the tubular holder, as will be understood.

The length of the tubular holder is such that the candle is almost entirely contained therein, and I provide a cap 4, which is itted on the upper end of the tubular holder and detachably connected thereto by means ,of suitable spring-catches 5, the said detachable cap having its upper end contracted and provided with an aperture 6, through which the wick of the candle protrudes, so that it may be ignited. As the candle burns the spring 3 acts to feed the same upwardly in the tubular holder to the aperture in the detachable cap. This construction and combination of devices causes the candle to be thoroughly consumed and to burn evenly and without waste.

I further provide a handle 7 which may be either of the form here shown or of any other suitable form and which is connected to the detachable cap for universal angular movement with relation thereto, so that when the Candlestick is being carried about by the' handle the candlestick will be at all times in a vertical position irrespective of the inclination of the handle, and thereby avoid the dropping of grease from the candle, as willbe readily understood.

Within the'scope of my invention the han` dle may be thus connected to the detachable cap by any suitable means. embodiment of myA invention I provide the cap with a spherical enlargement and the handle with a horizontally-shaped socket 9 to engage the said spherical enlargement.

It is thought the'foregoing description is such as to enable the construction and advantages of my improved Candlestick to be readily understood.v

I do not desire to limit myself to the precise construction and combination of devices herein shown and described, as it is evident that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
