Description

No. 730,183. PATENTED JUNE 2,1903. r. w. WILLB, WINDOW CLEANER. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 20, 1901. no MODEL.
TORNE V IN EzvTok,

UNITED STATES Patented June 2, 1903;
PATENT OFFICE.
WINDOW-FCLEAN ER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 730,183, dated June 2,1903. Application filed June 20, 1901. Serial No. 65,333 (No modL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. WILLE,
of parts for the above ends, hereinafter fully specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a perspective view of my improved device with the brush inserted therein. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, the brush being removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the brush detached, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the body of the window-cleaner, which is oblong in plan View and tapering or wedge shape in From said body extends a curved handle 2, projecting outwardly and rearwardly, so that the hand of the operator shall be removed from the surface of the window sufiiciently for convenient operation. An important feature of the improve-- ment resides in the tapering form of the body 1, the effect of which is to throw the handle 2 to the rear when the rubbing-surface 3 of said body is in contact with the window. Said rubbing-surface 3 is provided by means of a sheet of rubber united at the upper end with a projecting piece of rubber 4, attached to the rear side 5 of the body, the two attached edges ofthe pieces 3 and 40f rubber forming a lip 6, adapted to scrape closely the surface of the window.
Upon the rearside 5 of the body is secured a sheet of galvanized iron or tin 7, said sheet being secured to said body at the sides, as shown at 8, and standing out a short distance from the body in the middle, as shown at 9. Asocket is thereby formed for the tongue 10 of a brush, said tongue being formed of two sheets of galvanized iron or tin secured to= gether and inclosing therebetween a thick piece of felt or other suitable material 11 to form a brush. The lip of said holder which holds said brush extends out from the holder proper at an angle, so that when the edge of the brush is placed upon the window substantially at right angles thereto the main body of the window-cleaner extends at such an angle as to permit sufficient pressure to be conveniently applied to the window.
Upon the back of the body 5 is secured a bearing 12 for a clamp member 13, said clamp member comprising a piece of'wire bent to form two eyes 14:, pivoted on said bearing, and said wire extending rearwardly and downwardly on both sides of the handle and then in front of the handle and being bent at right angles at this end to form a lip to rest against the lower edge of the hand. Said wire extends in the other direction from said pivot to the back of the body of the window-cleaner and is there extended outwardly or laterally on each side to form a clamping-jaw 15, adapted to rest upon the back of the socket-plate for the brush-holder.
The operator in taking hold of the device by the' handle will extend his fingers around in front of the handle 16 of the clamp, so as to grasp the two together, thereby causing the clamp-jaw to press firmly down upon the back of the socket-piece and hold the brush in position. Moreover, when it is desired to' use apiece of chamois leather for cleaning the window this'can be done by inserting the chamois between the clamping-jaw and the back of the socket-piece and extending said chamois in front of the surface of the rubber 3. A piece of dampened chamois may be first inserted and the window rubbed therewith,
and then a clean dry cloth may be substituted therefor for polishing the window.
In using the device as a window-cleaner the brush,iwhich has been previously moistened, is first applied to the surface of the win do-w to discharge water thereon, and then the device is turned in the hand, and the rubber is applied to the surface of the window to spread the water over said surface and to clean the window by means thereof. When another part of the window has to be cleaned, the operation is repeated, moisture being applied by the brush and then friction being applied to the moistened surface by means of the rubber.
I claim 1. Asan article of manufacture, a windowcleaner comprising a body portion, a socket on the back of said body, a brush-holder having a stem in said socket, and a clamp member, pivoted on the rear side of said body and having a handle extending downward in front of the handle of the body, and a clampingjaw extending upward from said pivot and adapted to rest upon the back of the socket, substantially as described.
2. A window-cleaner comprising a body por tion having a fiat side and a handle secured thereto, a sheetmetal plate secured at its
