Description

DANIEL LAMPsoN, or LYoNs, Iowa.
Letters Patent o. 73,982, dated February 4.-, 1868.
turnover) WASHING-MACHINE.
@La rlpmrlr maar tu in tlgrsr tettws tant mit matting gmt nf tige samt,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, DANIEL LAMPSON, of Lyons, county of Clinton, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a. longitudinal section on line A, fig. 3.
Figure 2 is a view of manner of fitting the rib or slat.
Figure 3 is a perspective vfiew.
G, fig. 1, is the trough; S, space in hollow cylinder for water; B, zinc cylinder, d d d are slats on the cylinder; o o o o are slots on the trough; F, fig. 2, shows manner of fastening slats to the cylinder; J, iig. 8, handle to operate cylinder; C, tube to cylinder, in which to put hot water; F, cylinder-heads or ends; H openingvto draw oi' water.
Now, to enable others to make and usemy invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct the trough G of any suitable material, in which I have a corrugated rack iu the bottom, with slats crosswise, as shown. I construct a hollow cylinder, of zinc or any suitable material, in which I put hot water to keep up the temperature. The water also adds weight to the cylinder. This cylinder I encase with wood ends, and slats fastened toethese ends by dove-tailing them in. I make the slats of pine or some other soft wood. I cut the slot in the ends, dove-tailing, and force the slat in. The wood being soft, is compressed, and by swelling, by being wet, they are rmly held in place. I attach a handle to the cylinder at its axis to operate the cylinder. This may be of any suitable material. n
To operate the machine, I place the fabric to be washed in thetrcugh on the corrugated bottom. Then place the cylinder F on the same, the slats on the cylinder fitting between the slats on the bottom ofthe trough.
Fill the cylinder B with hot water through pipe C. I then have the water in the troughof propertemperature then I apply proper quantities of soap on the cloth, between the cylinder and trough. Now, by grasping the handle J, and moving it back and forth, the cylinder is moved over the clot-hes, and by its Weight and friction cleansing them. The water in the cylinder being hot, keeps the temperature of water in the trough up to the proper degree of heat for a sufficient time to properly cleanse the clothes; The water in the cylinder also adds weight to it, thereby acting with greater force on the fabric to be cleansed, cleaning it easier and quicker than otherwise. The corrugated bottom of trough G is movable. By taking it out the water is easily drawn off at the aperture at H. i
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hollow cylinder B, encased with ends and slats, as above set forth. Y
2. The'combination and arrangement of the hollow cylinder B, the slats d, the corrugated trough-bottom, when constructed, arranged, and operating substantiallylas and for the purposes set forth..
