T0 ALL WIIOM. IT MAY CUNCERIT:
Be it lnovrn that I, S. P. GILBERT, or" Racine, in the county of Racine, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented nn Improved Piston for Bumps; and I do hereby declare their: the following is a full end exact descrip tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lettere oi reference marked thereon, melting n part of this specification, in whieh Figure 1 is a perspective representation oi my piston.
Figure 2, n plan view of the lower rim, in which ere shade the ports for Water to pees through.
The nature of my invention consists in the use of n ring, hnving en ennninr spnce in its peripheryfor holding the packing, end also arranged to wol-klip and down on the centre o? thepiston, end carry the pecking with it.
This invention relates to an improvement in that close oi' pistons, which nre arranged to ndrnit vreter to pass throughI between the packing and the piston oentre,"nnd 'Witheet the use of e centre-volvo.
In order to give s correct understanding of my invention, I hsve marked corresponding Peris with similar letters, and Will-now give e. detailed description. o
A represents the centre of the piston; having a. vertical opening :or supporting n piston-rod, C, es seenet gs. l und 2, and has rigidly nttached to it n circular enge, B, in which is mede a serios of kports or openings, D I), he., for the purpose of permitting water to -pass through when the piston is `i'erced downward. These portsof themselves, I consider new, but do not claim them in connection with my device. Ailenge, I, is attached to the centre, A, by means of orme G, andis used to prevent the packing E from getting out of place, end also as n. stop against the pin F, pnt through the centreA end piston-rod C. i I use any suitnblopnclring for lling the annular space in the ring I, and afdjnst it so thm: it may be expended hy means of water passing through holes J J made through the inside of the ring'I. l
The construction of the various .parts is quite simple, hut when arranged, as shown in the drawings, provides a. piston `which will operate to n. goed advantage, and notliahle to get out of order, like lthose pistons Whose 'packings are loose in annular spaces.
The piston should be made of cast iron, end the under eide of ring I ground 'to it the ilange B. in order to prevent water from passing through the joint during the upward movement of the piston.
This invention diers inaterially from all others, in consequence of the ring I, which slides on the centre A, and therefore does not wenn the packing, as when it operates loosely in en enlarged ep'ece.
Having thus described iny device, what I claim, and desire to secure byiIietters Patent, is-
Thering I, holding the pecking E, and forming a valve for the ports D, all euljstentially as and for the purpose set forth.
S. P. GILBERT. Witnesses:
Enma. Excuse,
