SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,429, dated September 22, 1903. Application filed November 14., 1902. Serial No. 131,360- (No model.)
To all'whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, PIERRE LIEVENS, manufacturer, a subject of the King of Belgium, and GUILLAUME JAHN, manufacturer, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, both residing at Brussels, Belgium, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Burglar or Similar Alarms or Indicating Apparatus 5 and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The present invention relates to burglar or similar alarms or indicating apparatus, and
. has for its chief object to provide an apparatus for indicating in areliable manner any unauthorized opening of a door, window, or safe, or of any closed or sealed chamber or article.
According to this invention a far-carrying acoustic or other signal is produced when any unauthorized opening of or' interfering with the door or window or any other closing takes place. The apparatus having previously been set in a certain manner by an authorized person acquainted with the apparatus, after shutting the door or cover, the secret device can be brought into'a'n inoperative position, in which it allows the door or.
cover to be opened without any detonation or signal being produced; but when the door is opened or interfered with without the secret device having been previously brought into this inoperative position a detonation or other signal will be given.
The accompanying drawings show one form of apparatus constructed according to this invention and in which manner the same is attached to a street-door.

13 is a shaft carrying the ratchet-wheel 14 and the gear-wheel 15, which latter is provided with a spring 16, pressing the-pawl 17 against the ratchet-wheel 14, so as to prevent the spring from unwinding.
18 is a disk fixed on the shaft 13 and formed I with a projection or nose 19, adapted to engage with a notch or recess of a disk 20. When the projection 19 rests against a circular portion'of the latter disk 20, it prevents the disk 18 from moving, whereby the overwind ing of the spring will be avoided.
The gear-wheel 15 on the shaft meshes with a gear-wheel 21, having mounted on its shaft another gear 22, engaging with a third gear 23. Fixed to the shaft 24 of this latter gear-wheel is a blade 25, formed at its extremities with projections 26, which may be arrested by a stop 27, carried on a ratchetwheel 28, which is locked by a spring 29. The shaft 30 of the ratchet-wheel 28 carries outside the casing the pointer-arm or indicator 31, moving along a division or scale 32, divided into a certain number of equal parts say, for example, twelve parts. The ratchet.-
wheel 28has asmany teeth as there are divisions in the scale and can be moved'by a pushrod 9, carrying an arm 33, to which is pivoted a finger 34, kept in position by a spring 36. The fin ger 34 engages with the teeth of the ratchetwheel 28, which'causes the pointer-arm v31 to move along the scale 32. 1
The push-rod 9, which is located in the easing 8, so as to be invisible from outside, is returned to the initial position by a returnspring 37. The lockin g blade 25 can be locked also by a pin or projection 38, carried on the spring 39, when the latter is moved by its operating-arm 40 turning about a fixed pivot 41. The other end of this operatinglever 40 is formed with a recess or notch eonstituting a hinge connection 42 with a lever 43, pivoted to the casing. 011 this pivot 43, carried by the pivoted lever 46, is mounted another lever 45, provided with an elongated slot 48, in. which may be moved a slide-piece 50. Through this slide-piece passes a screwbolt 47, furnished with a handle 49. A setscrew 51, arranged in the operating-arm 40, serves for regulating the tension of the spring 39. The whole mechanism iscarried in a frame formed chiefly of the plates 52 and 53.
On the shaft 13 for winding the spring and outside of the plate 53 there is fixed an arm 54, engaging with a recess 55, formed in looselymounted piece 56, provided with a slot 57 and serving as guide for a part 58, which is movable about a pivot 59, fixed to the casing-plate A sheet or piece 60, fixed to the movable part 58, maintains the loose guide-piece 56 in position thereon. The loose guide-piece 56 is kept in engagement with the arm 54 on the shaft by a spring 61 and is at the same time forced against the signaling device by the spring 62. The loose guide-piece 56 also serves as a stop for an arm 63, carried on the one end of the signal-actuating spring.
The indicating or signaling apparatus proper is composed of a tube 65, through which passes a rod 66, formed on its lower end with a handle 67 and at its upper end with a point (38, serving to fire a cartridge or detonator placed in a chamber 69, mounted axially with the tube 65. The tube 65 and chamber 69, which is preferably tubular, are fixed to a support at a distance apart permitting of the introduction of a cartridge.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: Before closing the door the pointer-arm 31 is set to 0 on the division or scale 32, in which position the stop 27 prevents the blade 25 from turning. Then the mainspring 12 is wound up by means of the key 11, and a small lever 45, controlling the second step, is adjusted by turning a set-screw 47 or otherwise in such a manner as to bring the projection or pin 38 into the path of the stop-blade 25. The handle 67 of the firing device is pulled down, so that the arm 63 is locked by the stop 50, and a cartridge is introduced in the tube 69. The apparatus is now ready for use. \Vhen the door is closed, the mainspring 12 cannot unwind, owing to the stop 27. In the closed position of the door, moreover, the adjustable lever 45 strikes against the framework, so as to bring the second projection 38 into the path of the stop-blade 25, which latter therefore is double-locked. By means of a key-bit 5 or extra ward on the ordinary door-key4 the operating-lever 6 is now turned, whereby the cover of the casin g 8, containing the push-rod, is lifted by means of a rope 7 or its equivalent, and the push-rod 9 becomes accessible from outside of the door. This push-rod 9, or it maybe a press-button, is now actuated through any desired number of turns-say,for example, four turns-whereby the stop 27, connected with the pointer 31, is moved from the stop-blade, so as to release it, so that the blade 25 is now locked and the spring prevented from unwinding only by the projection 38, controlled by the adjustable lever 45. When an authorized person wishes to open the door, the key 4 is inserted by a half-turn, opens again the small casing S, and before openingthe door the pointer has to be restored to 0, so as to lock the spring 39 by means of the stop 27, preventing the 'blade 25 from turning. Unless this is done the spring 39 will unwind upon opening the door, as the other stop locking the blade will then be brought upon opening the door out of the way of the blade. In order to bring the pointerto 0, the operator has now to actuate the push-rod eight times, as the scale and the ratchet-wheel 28 are divided into twelve parts, and the pointer had been moved prevlously through four parts. This resetting of the apparatus to 0, which can be done only by an authorized person knowing the previous position of the pointer, constitutes a secret or safety part of the apparatus. After resetting the apparatus to 0 the operator continues turning the key and opens the door without the apparatus coming into action. Supposing, now, that an unauthorized person opens the door with an ordinary key, the small casing containing the push-rod or press-button will remain closed, the spring 39, released upon opening the door bythe lever 45, Fig. 6, will move the pin or projection from the stopblade 25, and the spring 12 will therefore unwind. In consequence thereof the pawl 54 moves and carries with it the loose guidepiece 56, which removes the stop 63 from the rod 66. The latter rod 66 strikes, under the influence of its spring 64, with its pointed end 68 against the cartridge in the tube 69 and fires the same, whereby an. alarm is given. Thesame will be the case when an unauthorized person opens the door with a key having the proper key-bit, as, unacquainted with the secret of the apparatus-that is to say, with the number of turns given' previously to the indicator-he will not know how many times it must be operated for resetting the apparatus to O.
The arrangement of a scale 32 and pointer, visible from the inside of the room, has the object to show the position of the apparatus to persons living in the same house, so as to enable them to reset the apparatus to 0.
It is obvious that the indication by an acoustic signal could be replaced by any other indicatin g device actuated directly or indirectly by closing the circuit of an electric bell or the like. It is to be understood that the apparatus can be applied to doors, windows, or any other closing devices, and can be fixed as well to the movable part as to the frame or stationary part of the closing. It is essential,
however, that the part which looks or unlocks the clock-work connected to the spring-that is, in the example above given, the lever 45, provided with the set-screw 47should come into action when the movable part, door, window, cover, or the like is moved from the stationary part of the Closing.
We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with two parts of a closured opening to an apartment, one of which is movable with reference to the other, of a self-propelled mechanism, means for securing said mechanism against action, said means being engageable with both of said parts and actuative upon their relative movements, a scale, and a manually-controlled means for securing said mechanism against action, said last-named means being movable with reference to said scale and adapted to secure said mechanism when at a given point on the scale,
substantially as described.
2. The combination, with two parts of a closured opening to an apartment, one of which is movable with reference to the other, of an alarm, actuating means therefor, means for securing said actuating means against action, said securing means being engageable with both of said parts and actuative upon their relative movement to release said actuating means, a scale, and a manually-controlled means for securing said actuatingmeans retracted, said last-named means being movable with reference to said scale and adapted to secure said actuating means" when at a given point on the scale, substantially as described.

4. The combination, with two parts of a 010- sured opening to an apartment, one of which is'movable with reference to the other, of an alarm, actuating means therefor, means for securing said actuating means against action, said securing means being engageable with both of said parts and actuative upon their relative movement to release said actuating means, a manually-controlled means'for securing said actuating means retracted, amovable cover for concealing said manually-controlled securing means, a key, andmeans for conveying the action of the key to the-cover, substantially as described.
