SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,899, dated September 15, 1903.
Application filed May 18, 1903. Serial No. 157,510, (No model.)

Be it known that I, EDWIN S. GILES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fenton,
county of Genesee, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Window-Screens, of which the fol-.
lowing is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object certain new and useful improvements in window-screens; and it consists of the mechanism hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing a screen-frame in expanded position embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective showing portions of the frames, the frames being broken away to more fully illustrate the invention. Fig. 3 is an edge view I of the frames shown in a partially-closed position. Fig. 4 is a detail View ofthe clasp. Fig. 5 is aview in transverse section through the frames as on the line 5 5, Fig. 3.
The aim of my invention is to provide adjustable screen-frames, the s a me being of sim ple and economical construction and efficient in their operation.
In the accompanying drawings, a a represent two companion frames, each constructed with two side rails and a connecting end rail. To each of these frames is attached wire netting or gauze (indicated atb b) provided at their adjacent ends with a metal binding, (indicated at c o.) The said rails of each of the frames on the opposite or outer surfaces thereof are constructed with longitndinal grooves, (indicated at d (1.) Metal clasps are indicated at e, constructed as shown in detail in Fig. 4. The clasps are each bent intermediate the lateral edges thereof to form side flanges, (indicated by the numerals 1 and 2), said side flanges 1 and 2 terminating with inwardly-turned flanges 3 and 4, the inwardly-turned flanges 3 and 4 entering the recesses d d of the companion frames, as shown. The intermediate or body portion of the clasp extends over the adjacent edges of both the frames a a and is secured in any suitable manner to one of said frames. This may be done simply by indenting the body portion of the clasp into one of the frames,
as indicated at f, or the clasp may have a fixed engagement with one of the frames in any suitable manner, so thatthe clasp will be held rigid upon one of the frames, while the other frame has a movable or adjustable engagement therewith.
It will readily be seen that the two frames at a are held from lateral disengagement by 6c the clasps, and the clasps meeting one another when the two frames are expanded will prevent the frames from being longitudinally disengaged the one from the other. The clasps e serve thus to hold the two parts of the frame together in a convenient manner. The engagement is such as is not liable to get out of order, nor are the frames liable to bind. The clasps are located at the inner ends of the corresponding framesand are engaged 7:: upon the upper and lower rails of the frame.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. An adjustable window-screen compris ing two frames constructed with longitudinal grooves. on the outer faces of the upper and lower rails between the opposite edges thereof, said frames having-in combination therewith metallic clasps attached to the inner ends of the upper and lower rails of the frames, and each having a sliding engagement with the frame opposite that to which the clasp is attached, said clasps each constructed with flanges projecting from opposite edges thereof inwardly over the lateral face of the frame to which the clasp is attached and over the lat eral face of the'adjacent frame, said clasps provided with inwardly turned marginal flanges projecting into the corresponding grooves of the frame, substantially as set forth.
