mmm. PATENTED SEPT.8,1903. v
- A. J. MAYER.
I WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 22, 1903.

v No. 738,728.
UNITED" STATES Patented September 8, 1903.
PATENT FFICE.
WRENCH.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 738,728, dated September 8, 1903.
Application filed January 22, 1903. Serial No. 140,164. (No model.)
To aZZ.zuh0m it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS J. MAYER, acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Homestead, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
.or handled without liability of the parts becoming brokenor disengaged.
' A still further object of my invention is to provide a device that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its operation; furthermore,
one wherein the teeth will not become clogged and the device may be easily cleaned.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification, and
wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench, showing the same in a locked position. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the movable jaw in the unlocked position and clearly illustrating the position of the sliding jaw when ready for operation. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.
' In the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates the shank of the wrench, which in cross-section is substantially square in form and carries at its outer end the rigid jaw 2. The movable or slidable jaw 3 is apertured to receive the shank 1, and this jaw 3 is carried on the supplemental shank 4, provided throughout the major portion of its outer face with teeth 5, which are adapted to mesh with the teeth 6, formed on the inner face of the lever 7, which acts in the capacity of a locking-lever for the movable or slidable jaw. This lever 7 is pivoted at its inner end in the keeper or yoke 8, rigidly secured to the main shank 1. main shank 1 is provided at its inner end with guides 9, which extend beyond the inner face of the shank and form a way which receives the supplemental'shank 4, which slides therein. The lever7 is provided withasimilar way to receive the supplemental shank 4 when the lever 7 is closed thereagainst, and when so closed the lever is held in the closed engagement with the hinged cup 10, carried by the-end of the portion 9, forming a part of the handle for the wrench, the other portion of said handle being carried by the lever 7. When the lever is in the closed position, the teeth 5 and 6 are interlocked and the slidable or movable jaw is hold in the position to which it has been moved. When'it is desired to shift the jaw, the cap 10 is disengaged, the lever 7 moved outwardly, as seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and the slidable jaw and its shank is then free to be moved away from the stationary jaw 2.
It will be noted that Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to seou re by Letters Patent, is-- The- 1. The combination with a fixed jaw and the shank thereof, said shank having its lower portion formed with a slideway, of a keeper secured to said shank, a movable jaw having a toothed shank slidably mounted in said shank adapted to lock the movable jaw, and
a pivoted cup inclosing the lower ends of said lever and first-named shank.
2. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a wrench provided with mounted in the said keeper, teeth mounted in the said supplemental shank, a lockinglever carried by the said keeper provided with teeth to engage with the teeth of the 15 supplemental shank, a guide rigidly secured to the main shank and the said lever, the said guide provided with ways to receive the supplemental shank, and a hinged cup carried by the said main shank for holding the said teeth in interlocking engagement substantially as-described.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in the'presence of two witnesses.
AUGUSTUS J. MAYER.
