A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all'the views.

Figurel is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a crosssection ofthe same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a similar View of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a front view showing the saw in position for the plunger to act upon a tooth thereof.

The body A of the saw-set is formedwith a fixed` rearwardly-extending handle B, provided with upwardly-extending lugs B', carrying the pivot C' for the hand-lever C, employed for imparting a forward sliding motion to the plunger D, the head D' of which is l y mounted to slide in the body A, the plunger having its rear end provided with a block D2, mounted to slide onthe top of the handle B and between the inner faces of the lugs B', and the said-block D2 is pressed on by the rear end of a spring E, coiled on the plunger D and abutting with its forward end against the rear face of the body A. The spring E holds the plunger D normally in a rearmost position, asshown in Fig. l, so that the face of the headD' of the plungerD is iiush with the front face of the body A. (See Fig. 1.)

The block D2 of the plunger D abuis against a shoulder or arm C2 on the hand-lever C, and as the plunger D is pressed on by the spring it is evident that the lever C is normally held in an open position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. Now when the hand-lever C is moved downward toward the handle B, then the shoulder or arm C2 presses on the block D2 to slide the plunger D forward against the tension of its spring E, to project the front end of the head D' beyond the front face of the body A. (See dotted lines in Fig. l.) As soon as the operator releases the pressure on the hand-lever C, the spring E returns the plunger and hand-lever to the normal position previously mentioned and shown in full lines in Fig. l.

On the front face of the body A is arranged a loop F, having an opening F', through which passes the saw-tooth to be treated, so as to bring the tooth directly opposite the face ofthe plunger-head D' for the latter to set the tooth on moving the plunger D forwardly by pressing the hand-lever C, as previously explained. The loop F has its top {iush with the bottom of the plunger-head D', and the loop-opening F' is sufficiently large to allow the tooth and 75 saw to assume an inclined position to cause the saw-tooth to abut directly on the face of the head D'. Now in order to hold the saw and its tooth in the inclined position, I proportion of the body A, to project a distance from the face of the body to hold the'saw in an inclined position.

In order to limit the forward sliding move- `vide a set-screw G, screwing in the lower 8o ment. of the plunger D, I provide the handle B with a set-screw H for the hand-lever O to rest on when pressed downward. The rearward sliding'movement of the plungerD is limited by an extension C3, formed on the hand-lever C and adapted t-o abut or rest on 9e the top of the body A at the time the face of the head D of the plunger is iiush with the front face of the body A. The face of the head D' of the plunger is formed with a straight top portion D3, a downwardly and rearwardly inclined portion D4, and beveled side portions D5, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2, so'as to properly Iit the tooth and give the desired set to the same Without danger of breaking the tooth or injuring the same, esroo ward movement can be regulated by the operator adjusting the set-screw H. accordingly in the fixed handle B. By having the block D2 preferably made square and fitted bel tween the lugs B and the top of the handle B it is evident that theplunger D is held against turning movement, and consequently the face of the head D' always stands in the proper position relative to the tooth to be treated.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent;-

1. A saw-set, comprising a body having a straight front or Working face and provided with a guideway leading to its working face and with a loop projecting from its working face with its top flush with the bottom of the said guideway and through which the tooth of the saw to be set is adapted to project in front of the guideway, a set-screw in the body at the side of the loop opposite to that which the guideway is located, and extending through the same to the front or Working face thereof for engaging the saw to hold the tooth in the loop and it and the saw at the desired angle, a plunger mounted in thevbody and having one end working in the guideway thereof and normally held retracted within the same, and means for operating the plunger to project it beyond the working face of the body to engage the saw-tooth projecting through the said loop, as set forth.
