.PECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,424, dated September 8, 1903.
Application filed March 81, 1903 Serial No. 150,8 70. (No model.)
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that we,WILLIAM EOOLES, residing at Heworth, York, and JOHN LORAINE ROBSON, residing at Bishopthorpe road,York, England, subjects of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable thoseskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improvement in windows whereby counterbalanced sashes may be conveniently swung or turned into a room, so as to facilitate the cleaning thereof; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in'the following specificatiom'of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which-- Figure 1 is a front view of a Window-frame provided with the usual sashes and embodying our invention, the sashes being shown in an open position; Fig. 2, a cross-sectionon the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing a modified form and the sashes closed; Fig. 4., a detail view showing means for supporting the counterbalanceweights when it is desired to disconnect the cords from the sashes at one side, so as to swing the-sashes inwardly; Fig. 5, a detail of a device for connecting the counterbalance-cords with the sashes, and Fig. 6 a view of another detail of the construction.
Our improvement, which can be fixed to any existing sashes, consists of metal tubes A and D, fixed in the place of the present front and central beads or strips at one side of window-frame and revoluble on suitable supports at the top and bottom thereof and forming a hinge or hinges upon which the sashes open into a room. In these tubes are formed vertical slots or openings A and the sashes are provided with plates B, located at proper intervals and provided with knobs or heads 13*, movable in said tubes and connected with the plates B'by necks B movable in the slots A and by means of this construction the sashes are free to be moved up and down in the usual manner when closed, and when the sashes are open the knobs or heads B hold them in the manner of a hinge.
On the side of the window-frame opposite the tubes A is a safeguard J, comprising a handle portion J a plate J and shank J which passes through an opening J in a front face-plate secured to the window-frame and through the middle separating-partition L and so located as to be about two inches under the counterbalance-weights J when the sashes are drawn down to the bottom of the window-frame, and this safeguard supports the weight to allow the cords at that side to be detached from the window-sashes when it is desired to open the sashes for any pnrpose.
The center bead or strip G at the side of the window-frame opposite the tubes A is also formed of separate parts hinged together, as shown at G so that said head or strip may be folded upwardly high enough to allow the sashes when in their lowermost position to be swung inwardly, and when the parts of this bead or strip are in their normal position they may be secured in any desired manner.
The front head or strip II on the side of the frame opposite the tube A is hinged to the frame, so that it may be swung inwardly and turned back into place whenever desired in order that the sashes may be swung inwardly, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and when this head or strip is in its normal position it may also be secured in any desired manner.
The counterbalance-cords N are provided with spring-hook-attaching devices F, having forked shanks F between which the counterbalance-cords are secured by means of screws F, the heads of which are countersunk, as shown at F, and this construction allows new cords to be substituted whenever necessary, and the sashes are provided at their opposite sides with any suitable devices with which the hooks F may engage.
The bottom sash is designated. by the reference character N and the top sash by the reference character N and these sashes are provided with the usual grooves N in which the counterbalance-cords are free to move. \Vhen the sashes are of'unusual weight, clips K are provided and secured to parts of the window-frame, as shown in Fig. 3, and engage the tubes A, so .as to strengthen the same, and these clips are preferably fixed slightly above the middle portions of said tubes or at any desired point thereon.
The separate parts of this apparatus may be made of any desired material, brass or other suitable metal being preferred, and can be painted the same as the rest of the frame or sashes and will not appear at all unsightly, and in practice the tube A is preferably slightly countersunk in the adjacent side or part of the frame, as shown in Fig. 2. The slots A in the tubes A and D are enlarged at their upper ends, as shown at A to permit of the knobs or heads 13 being passed into said tubes, and ateach end of these tubes a plate 0 is secured to the window-frame and provided with trunnions G which enter. the ends of said tubes and form pivots or hinges on which the said tubes are free to turn, and these plates 0 may be secured to the bottom and top of the window-frame or to the side thereof, as may be desired, and the plates C may be any desired shape or form, according to the shape or form of the window-frame. It will be understood that the opposite sides of the frame are provided with the usual vertically-arranged spaces in which the weights J and the counterbalance cords and weights operate in the same manner as with other apparatus of this class.
Having fully described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A window-frame provided at one side with tubes which take the place of the central and front bead or strip and which are rotatably supported, said tubes being provided rsaezs provided with knobs or heads adapted to be inserted into said tubes and having necks movable in said slots, said sashes being provided with counterbalance Weights and cords, substantially as shown and described.
3. A window-frame provided at one side with tubes which take the place of the central and front bead or strip and which are rotatably supported, said tubes being provided in one side with a vertical slot, and sashes provided with knobs or heads adapted to be inserted into said tubes and having necks movable in said slots, said sashes being provided with counterbalance weights and cords, and the frame being provided at one side with means for supporting the counterbalanceweights when it is desired to detach the cords thereof from the sashes, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 17th day of March, 1903.
