Be it known that I, DANIEL LOMBARD, of Boston, in the county of Su'olk, and State of Massachusetts,

have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Machines for Hulling Ootee, et' which the following is a full,

clear, and exact description, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making a part ci' this specication, in which- Figure I represents a longitudinal vertical section of a machine embodying my improvement.

Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same.

Figure' 3 is a view of the surface et' the corrugated plate.

Figure 4 is ametallic frame or spider.

Similar letters indicate like parts in the several figures.

The object of Vmy invention` is to produce a machine which will remove the husks or integumonts from the epilee-berry in an elicient and expeditious manner; and the invention consists in the employment of an endless band or apron, formed of a series of serrated or corrugated metal plates, joined or linked together so as to be rotated'upon drums arranged one at each end of the machine, in` combination with a serrated or corrugated metallic plate, so arranged in relation tothe endless band that the berries of coilee will be made to pass between the two, and by abrasion be deprived of theY integument o1' husk with which they are covered. And the invention also consists in the employment, in. combination with the serrated plates, both stationary and rotating, of elastic bearing-pieces, for the purpose of allowing the same to yieldor give, in the event of any hardsubstances or particles of larger size than the coffee-berry passing into the machine. The invention also consists of a metallic frame or spider, for sustaining the upper portion of the endless belt during its operation.

Referring to the drawings, a a represents the frame of a hulling-machine, in which are supported, at either end and at diierent heights, the drums I e. Supported upon these drums is an endless band, formed of a series of metallic plates secured together in such a manner as to admit of the band being freely moved by the drums as the latter rotate. The'outer faces of the said plates are serrated or corrugated. The upper portion of the endless band d is supported in a position parallel with the upper plate by means of a vmetallic: frame or spider of the form shown in iig. 4, and consisting of two parallel longitudinal bars 7L 7L, attached to armste', resting upon the sides of the frame, as shown in tig. 2. Underneath the ends of the arms tare placed pieces or blocks of India rubber r 7". Over the upper portion of the endless'band CZ is placed a metallic plate, c, serrated or corrugated on its under surface, as shown in fig. 3, and extendingnearly the whole'length ofthe upper surface of' the endless band d. Thesaid plate is formed with sides e', projecting downwards on each side of the upper portion of the band d, as shown in tig. 2, for the purpose of preventing the berries from escaping over the sides of the band. The plate e is supported in the upper part of the machine by means of rods aand screw-nuts n., in connection with arched or curvedcross-hars g, extending across the top of the i'rame.

-Betweenprojections,y", on the upper part of the plate e, and the cross-pieces g, are placed blocks of India rubber, 1', upon the rods o, for the purpose oi' allowing a yielding motion to the plate e, in case any hard foreign substance of larger sise than the coffee-berries should pass into the machine.` i

By means ot' the nuts n n, the plate e may be adjusted to increase or diminish the space between it and the endless band cl. The endless band d is put in motion by the application ofl any suitable power to the drum c, which is provided with teeth or projections fitting between the plates of `which the band is composed.

At one end of the machine is a hopper, provided with an adjustable plate, m, by which the amount of berries to be fed to the endless band is regulated.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the endless band d, composed of serrated metal plates, with th'e serrated plate e, provided with the sides e, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. I claim the combination ot' the endless band d, the supportingframe t z', and the elastic bearings r', as described. i l
