SPECIFlGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,128, dated September 1, 1903.

Be it known that I, EDGAR W. SUMMERS, of Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Metallic Cars, of which improvement the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to providea sheet-metal railway-car which shall combine the characteristics of lightness, strength, and rigidity with those of cheapness of construction and durability in service.
The improvementclaimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of a portion of a car illustrating an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2, a partial bottom plan of the same; Fig. 3, a vertical longitudinal section; and Fig. 4 a fragmentary vertical transverse section, on an enlarged scale, on the line '7 7 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, A A represent the sides of the car; B, the floor; O, the end; D, the bolster; E, the draft-beam, and F the drawhead.
The draft-beam (indicated by E) is an inverted-U shaped beam. It has a top plate which abuts the under side of the end plate b of the floor, to which it is secured by numerous rivets 6', these rivets being countersunk on their upper side to leave a smooth upper surface to the floor. The vertical sides 6 of this beam are flanged outward at their inner ends and riveted to the bolster, as shown at 6 At the lower edges the beam is flanged outward, as at e, which lower edges are secured to the flanges d of the bolster and to the plate (1 and where the draft-beam crosses the end O of the car to the lower end thereof by means of the plates 0, which are riveted to the inturned flanges 0- at the base of the car end and are also riveted to the flanges c of the draft-beam. This draft-beam lies between a pair of angle-bars 0 which are riveted to the car end, and the vertical sides 6 of the beam are riveted to the adjacent sides of these angle-bars. The floor-plate b is turned up and riveted to the end plate of the car.
Within the draft-beam is the reinforcing member .T, which isprcferably a steel casting Divided and this application filed January 29, 1903. Serial v (No model.)
of the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4. This casting is secured within the draft-beam by the same rivets which secure the beam to the angle-bars c and to the outturned flanges c of the car end and by some of the rivets which secure the draft-beam to the car-floorb The casting has strengthening-websj depending from its upper surface and has inturned flangesj forcon fining the draw-head F. This draw-head is of any suitable construction. It rests on the platej carried between the webs 7' of the steel casting and abutting the under side of the flanges 7", to which the plate may be secured by bolts. 'lhe draw-head is guided by the inturned flanges j and by the downwardly-extending flange j at the forward end thereof.
It will be observed that in the above-described car I have reduced the weight without sacrificing strength and rigidity. This reduction of weight is a very important factor, since the expense of hauling a loadis dependout upon the weight thereof, and the lighter the car the greater the proportion which the paying weight-that is, the freight carriedbears to the whole weight, which means that for the same capacity the efficiency of the car increases with its lightness.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A draft-beam having bottom flanges in combination with the metallic load-retaining end wall-plate of the car which has also a bottom flange,and means for securing said flanges together.
2. The combination of a sheet-metal draftbeam in the form of a U-shaped plate, anda reinforcing-casting within such beam and riveted thereto, said casting and draft-beam being both secured to the end of the car.
3. A hollow sheet-metal draft-beam and a reinforcing-casting within the same which casting has webs or flanges for strengthening it and confining the draw-head, combined with the end of the car, said end and casting and draft-beam being secured together by the same rivets.
4:. A metallic car having an end plate and a load-supporting floor leading therefrom, combined with a draft-beam having substantially vertical sides, said beams being secured IOC I end wall-plate of the car, which has also an integral bottom flange, and means for securing said flanges together.
