CHARLES DIEDRIGHS, OF PHlLADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSlGNOR TO JAMES S. MASON AND CMPANY.
yLetters Patent No. 73,784, dated January 28, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUNGEING AND RAISING DISKS FEDM METAL.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES DIEDRICHS, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Fennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Machine foriPunching and Raising Disks from Metal; andI do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to 'ully understand and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making partrof this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, illustrating myinvention.
Figure 2 is a. top view of La detached portion thereof.
Figures 3 and 4 represent the cut and raised disk.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention has for its object 'a device for punching and raising disks from metal, and consists in a punch or cutter and a raising-plunger or stamp, and a carrier for feeding the cut metal or disk to the raising-mechanism, the parts being operated in a suitable manner, and constructed and arranged as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings, A represents a platform or table, supported upon suitable legs or framing, a. From the table or platform'arises a standard, B, of suitable form, and to which are pivoted two levers, vC D. The lever C is passed through a slot, in the standard B, and 'has vits front end pivoted to a plunger, E, which is guided, in its rising and falling motions, by the pieces or arms c and d, on the standard B, and receives said motions from'the lever C, through the medium of a vertical shaft or lever, F, t which the rear end of the. lever C is pivoted, the shaft F being operated by an eccentric, e, on the main driving-shaftf, said eccentric having a suitn able yoke, towhich' the' shaft F is connected. The plunger E carries, Yat its lower end, a punch, G, of cylindrical form, having a dat faceand a cutting-edge. Thellever D is turned into forks g and 7a, at or near the point towhich it is pivoted to the standard B, and the forks continue beyond said point, thereby straddling the standard. The ends of these forks enter openings in an ordinary cross-head, H, whose sides are turned into ears or bosses j, sliding on vertical pins or rods 7c, secured to the table or platform A. It is evident that the cross-head will rise and fall in a vertical direction, being operated by the lever D and shaft F. The cross-head carries a stamp-head or raising-plunger, J, of size and form to correspond with the punch G, so that the disk cut by the latter will be suitably raised or stamped by the former. K represents the feedtable, consisting of a plate, l, placed on the bcd'L, mounted transversely on the. table or platform A, and under the punch-G. Thev said feed-table K has aV gauge, for receiving and holding the blank while being cut, and consists of side'strips or guides, m, and lugs n n', all of which prevent the lateral and transverse play of the blank while being cut. The bed L has an opening, o, of size to correspond to the punch G, and extending to about its middle, where it opens outwardly on opposite sides, as at p, and forms a channel or race M, through which slides a carrier or slide, N, The bed-plate has connected to its front side a. continuation-piece, O, resting on the platform or table A,'and provided with flanges, hat both sides, so as to form a channel or race, s, which communicates with the channel M of the bed L, (see iig. 2.) The carrier N slides in the race or channel M @,Yand is operated by a. rod,t, which plays in a longitudinal slot, u, in the continuation-piece O, and is pivoted to any part of the framing a, and operated forwards and backwards by a rod connected to the eccentric e, or a cam on same shaft,f, through .suitable intermediate levers and arms, or otherwise. P is the bed ofthe stamp or raising-plunger il', having an opening, v, of a size to correspond to the head J, and provided with a shoulder, w, near'itsI upper end, ontwhich the cut or punched disk will-rest previous to being raised or stamped. The bed P lies transversely on 'the platform A, and its opening, a, communicates with a corresponding opening in the platform A. The space surrounding the opening c excepting towards the front. side, hasa circular flange on top of the plate P, so as to check or limit the play of theicut disk, and cause it to rest onthe shoulder w, and ready for raising, the said cut disk being passed over the flanged space, at the cut-`away portion of the front -side ijust mentioned.` The inner cud of the carrieifN has a lug or projection, g/,Is'o as'to insure the punched' er cut disk being vpushed towards the raised.
The operation is as follows: Power being communicated to the main shaftf, the punch G and raising-stamp J will be advanced towards their beds, K and P, the metal blank having been meanwhile placed on the feedtable K, and moved thereon against the lug n. The punch G will be advanced somewhat ahead ot the stamp J, and punch or cut the blank, in the form of a disk, as shown in`ig. 3, and which will dropv in the channel or way M. The carrier N is now moved forward, and will push the disk, through the channel M, on to the shoulder w'of the bed P, and immediately/'return to its first position, ready to move the next disk. The stamp J is now I loivered to its full extent, and will press the disk through the opening v, and causeit to raise'or be formed with a flange, as shown in fig. 4, and thus drop out beneath the table A. The next disk will undergo the saine operation, and so on throughout.
The means for operating the punch, stamp, and carrier may be modified or diierently arranged and constructed other .than that shown, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact location thereof. My invention will be found to be practical, simple, and useful. l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-
The combination of the punch" G, stamp J, feed-board K, consisting ofthe parts Z, m, n, n', and carrier. N, sliding'beneath the punch in the channel M s, and advancing but one disk directly tothe stamp before another is cut, substantially as described.
To the above I have siguedmyfname, this 8th day of November, 1867. i CHARLES DIEDRICHS,
Witnesses:
WM. A: WIEDERSHEIM, WM.. M.- CLARK.
