To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, AUGUST SoHENoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Travis, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to a barrel-press, and particularly to a follower adapted to retain the contents of a barrel submerged beneath the liquid therein.

The invention has for an object to provide a follower having upon its upper face pivotally-mounted holding-arms and a spring-1e tained lifter engaging said arms and slidably mounted upon a handle-post extending upward from the head.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved form of lifter formed of a single piece of wire.

Another object of the invention is to provide an extension-stave adapted to be removably secured to the upper end of the barrel when the press is used at the top of the barrel before the holding-arms can secure contact with the side staves thereof.

Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth, and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of the press applied to a barrel; Fig. 2, a vertical section thereof; Fig. 3, a detail perspective of the extension-stave,and Fig. 4 a similar view of the lifter.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.

The letter A designates the follower-head of the press, which may be of any desired construction or configuration and is herein shown as provided with a series of apertures A to permit the passage of liquid therethrough when the contents of the barrel are submerged. Extending upward from this head is a handle-post A secured at its lower end by a shoulder A above the head and a fasteningblock A below the same, while the upper end of the post is supplied with a suitable handle A secured thereto in any desired manner-for instance, by a cross-pin A".

Slidably mounted upon this post is the lifter B, which may be formed of any desired material, but preferably of a single piece of Wire having the twisted end sections B formed with a loop 13* at their outer end to surround the holdingarms 0, which are pivotally mounted in ears 0, secured to the upper face of the head, while the free ends of the wire lifter are coiled about the post A to form a sliding collar B and thence carried upward and formed into finger-hooks B at each side of the post, adapted to be grasped by the fingers of the operator when the palm of the hand is in contact with the handle A This lifter is normally held in its lowest position with the holding-arms in contact with the staves of the barrel by means of a coiled spring 13 resting at its lower end upon the coiled portion B of the litter and at its up per end bearing against the under side of the handle A When it is desired to release the holding-arms, the hooked portions B are drawn upward, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, thus carrying the arm 0 in a curved path away from the staves of the barrel and releasing the press, so that it can be removed from the barrel or pressed downward therein to hold the contents of the barrel beneath the liquid in which it is desired to submerge them. When a barrel is first opened and it is desired to use the press at the upper end thereof, it is frequently difficult to secure contact of the holding-arms with the staves of the barrel, and in order to render this use of the press practical extension-staves D have been provided and extended above the top of the barrel. These extensions are adapted to be removably connected to the upper ends of the stave by means of a spring-plate D',carried upon the outer face of the extensions, and the body of the extension is suitably formed with a projection D adapted to enter the chime at the upper end of the staves, and thus retain the extension firmly in position. This stave extension is peculiarly adapted for use in connection with a barrel-follower when the arms thereof extend above the bar rel-top and being temporarily attached is not intended for any other function, The particular construction of the extension-stave permits its quick insertion and removal from merge the material therein and retain the same under any desired pressure, while the lifter permits the disengagement of the holding-arms without the necessity of the operator bringing his hand in contact with the brine contained within the barrel, and when i the lifter is disengaged the tension-spring at once throws the same downward and permits the arms to engage the inner wall of the barrel-staves, thus retaining the press in position without further manipulation by the operator.

It will be obvious that changes may be made in the details of construction and configuration without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a barrel-press, a follower-head, a handle-post extending upward therefrom, holding-arms pivotally mounted upon the upper face of said head, and a rigid lifter slidably mounted between its ends upon said post and having loops slidably engaging said arms at its opposite ends; substantially as specified.

2. In a barrel-press, a follower-head, a handle-post extending upward therefrom, holding-arins pivotally mounted upon the upper face of said head, a rigid lifter having a collar slidably mounted upon said post and loops slidably engaging said arms at its opposite ends, a tension-spring surrounding said post and bearing upon the collar of said lifter to normally retain the same at the base of the post; substantially as specified.

3. In a barrel-press, a follower-head, holding-arms mounted thereon, means for disengaging said arms, and an extension stave adapted to contact with said arms and removably engage the upper end of a barrel-stave and extend above the barrel-top; substantially as specified.

4. In abarrel-press,an extension-stave comprising a body portion adapted to engage the upper end of a barrel-stave upon one face, and a spring-plate carried by said extension to engage the opposite face of the barrel-stave; substantially as specified.

5. In a barrel-press, a follower-head, a post secured thereto having a handle at its upper end, pivoted holding-arms carried by said head, and a lifter for said arms composed of a single piece of wire having looped portions to surround said arms and its free ends coiled about the post to form a sliding collar thence carried upward to form finger-hooks; substantially as specified.

6. In a barrel-press, a follower-head, a post secured thereto having a handle at its upper end, pivoted holding-arms carried by said head, a lifter for said arms composed of a single piece of wire having looped-portions to surround said arms and its free ends coiled about the post to form a sliding collar thence carried upward to form finger-hooks, and a tension-spring extending between said collar and the handle at the upper end of said post;

substantially as specified.
