Description

uitrit 'faire 'getraut @Hire JOHN W. .RUS-.SELL AN D vDAVID JOLINE, OF TOTTENVILIJE, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 73,758, dated vJanuary 2S, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT'IN Aucuous.
To ALL'WHOM 1T MAY conocen: v
Be it know that We, JOHN W'. RUSSELL and DAVID JOLINE, of Tottenville, county of Richmond, and State of' New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Anchors; and we 4do'hereby declare that the following .is a. full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,l makinga part of this specification.
' The nature of our invention consists iu the combination of double and pivoted'ilukes with' the double Shanks l of an anchor, when constructed in the form of a bow to yan ox-yoke, or the breast-bone of a turkey, on the letter U, so that, while two palms of the linkes maybe in the ground, to takethe strain, the other two palms of the linkes will be closed -dowri on Vthe Shanks, and the fouling 'of the chain or cable of a vessel will thereby beA prevented.
We construct the Shanks of the anchorin the form above referred to, with a linke on each end of the shank, and attach the cable or chain to the" centre of the shank. Theukes are attached by bolts tothe shank, being made to swivel thereon as lin the anchor known as the Porters atcnt or swivel-iluke anchors. In the'accompanying `drawings- Figure 1 represents a perspective viexv of the anchor in its proper position, with its two iluk'es buried in the ground. v Y
Figure 2 shows` the form of the Shanks, and the linkes are secured to the ends 6.
"The iiukes, with their palms, are shewniat e, in Figure 3.
The attachment of the cable or chain is shown at a, in iig. 2.
The distance oi' the ends ofthe shank should be suiiicient to causeone palm ofeuch shank to i'all'upon the ground or hottomvvithout the aid of an anchor-stock. l
In this our improved anchor it will be observed that the difiieultyoi fouling the chain with the anchor, as we construct it, is in great measure thus obviatethund this we hold unimportant feature of our improvement.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
.lh'e combination of the double and pivoted ilukes with the double shanks of the anchor, vwhen constructed substantially in the manner and for the purpose as herein described and shown. 1
` JOHN W. RUSSELL,
DAVID JOLINE.
