AUGUST K. BRAUN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ELECTRIC MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,553, dated August 25, 1903:
Application filed July 3, 1903- Serial No.164|181. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST K. BRAUN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Electric Motor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices wherein the application of electromagnetism to the propulsion of machinery is utilized, and particularly to that class of electric motors in which an armature is attracted by the energization of an electromagnet; and it has for its object the provision of an apparatus of the kind set forth simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and which operates rapidly and efficiently in practical use.
To attain the desired end, this my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and operation of parts herein set forth.
In order to enable my invention to be fully understood, I will proceed to explain the same by reference to the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 represents a plan view of a small motor embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both views.
Referring particularly to the drawings, A denotes the base of my motor, which consists of a hollow or box-like structureconstructed to contain an electric battery, the same being preferably made of a truncated pyramid shape and having the sides lined oif in imitation of brickwork in order to represent the solid bed of a power-motor. the base A may contain an electric battery 13, the electrodes of which are respectively connected with the post a, located on the exterior of the base A, and the wire b, extending upwardly through the base and being electrically connected with the electromagnets 0 C and C C The electromagnet O is connected with the insulated spring-finger D, and the electromagnet O is electrically connected with the insulated springfinger D. The said electromagnets are supported by a preferably integral metal frame E, provided with oppositely-disposed bearings e and with legs 6 and a projecting The interior ofarm E, provided with vertical lugs 6 in which is journaled a shaft F, carrying a pulleyf, fly-wheel f, pin or projection f and a crank-arm f The reciprocating armature The switch a is electrically connected with the frame E of my apparatus, preferably by means of a Wire running from the said frame to the switch a. v
In operation upon the switch a being closed or put in electric connection with the post a the electric current will pass through one pair of electromagnets-say the magnets C Othence through wire b to the insulated spring-finger D, which may at this moment be in electric connection with the rotatable pin or projection f which revolves between and alternately engages the spring-fingersD and D. The armature beingin a median position between the two pairs of electromagnets is now attracted by the electromagnets O C and upon approachingthe same causes the momentum of the fly-wheel a new circuit will be established through the wires 1) b with the electromagnets (J C and springfinger D, the armature-rod in the meantime having been moved by the crank-arm f and link 9 to its median position again. The armature is now attracted to the electromagnets 0 O and the shaft F is caused to rotate by the reciprocal movement of the armature G.
As it is evident that many changes in the construction, form, proportion, and relative arrangement of parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but that such changes and equivalents may be substituted therefor, and that What I claim as my invention is-- 1. In combination, two pairs of oppositelydisposed electromagnets, a reciprocating armature located therebetween and sustained by a rod passing through the magnet support or frame, a support for a shaft, two insulated springs, a projection on the shaft to engage each spring alternately, a crank-arm on said shaft, and a link intermediate the crank-arm and the armaturerod, and a hollow base, a switch located exteriorly of the same, and a battery contained within the base.
2. In combination, two pairs of oppositelydisposed electromagnets, a reciprocating armature located therebetween and sustained by a rod passingthrough the magnet support or frame, a projecting arm thereof forming a support for a shaft, two insulatedspring's, a projection on the shaft to engage each spring alternately, a crank-arm on said shaft, and a link intermediate the crank-arm and armature-rod, the said frame also serving to hold the magnet and shaft rigidly in position, and two terminals of an electric circuit, an electric connection'from one terminal through one coil to one of said fingers and an electric connection from the said terminal through the other coil to the other spring-finger, and also an electric connection between the shaft projection and the second terminal, and a hollow base, a switch located exteriorly of the same, and a battery contained within the base.
In testimony of the foregoing specification I do hereby sign the same, in the city of New York, county and State of New York, this 29th day of June, A. D. 1903.
AUGUST K. BRAUN. Witnesses:
