FERDINAND KING, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,418,'dated August 25, 1903. Application filed September 9, 1902. Serial No. 1221657. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FERDINAND KING, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the county and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Clasps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has for its object andit consists in garment or other analogous securing devices-such as, for instance, hose'supporters,cuff-holders,closure-securing devices, horse-blanket retainers, armlets, &c.
My invention will be found fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of the preferred form thereof, illustrating two adaptations; and Fig. 3 is a side view of the preferred form of my invention as employed in the adaptation illustrated in Fig. 2.
In said drawings, a is a sheet-metal plate having an elongated opening I), which near the free end of the plate a is somewhat narrowed and of uniform width.
0 is a tongue extending longitudinally of the opening I) and having the portion thereof which is adjacent the widened part of the opening approximating the same in width disposed close above the same and stamped into spherical form, as at d. Said portion (1 after curving downwardly, as at d, and then forwardly again terminates in an end portion 6, which is narrowed and lies in the narrowed portion of the opening b,extending short of the endf of said opening, so that there is thus left a space between said end of the opening and the end of the tongue. It should be remarked that, preferably by making the metal of the plate flexible, or rather elastic, the relative positions of the plate and tongue may be changed, so that the portion e of the tongue may be elevated out of the opening b. What has been so far described constitutes one member of the device. It may be variously constructed in other respects, so as to render it applicable for the particular pur: pose to which it is put-as, for instance, a
cuff-holder (see Fig. 1) (See Figs. 2 and 3.)
g The other member of the device involves as its essential feature a headed part 9. It may be either a cuff-button (see Fig. 1) or a button carried by a garment-supporter. (See or a hose-supporter.
Figs. 2 and 3.)
In interlocking the parts the button is introduced through the enlarged portion -of the opening I) under the portion cl of the tongue, said button being then pushed toward the end f of said opening. As it moves the plate A serves to positively stop the button from passing back out of the narrowed part of the opening. In releasing the parts the free end of the part a is pressed downwardly in such manner that a clearance is left between the plane of the end portion 6 of the tongue and the plane of the corresponding portion of the plate for the head of the button to move back between these parts. By shaping the tongue with first a downward bend and then a forward bend, so that the extremity lies in the narrow part of the opening I), the assembling of the parts is not only facilitated and a positive stop afforded to the shank of the button when the parts are properly engaged with each other, but the extremity of said tongue is sheathed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of two members one of which consists of a headed device and the other of which comprises a part having an elongated opening relatively narrow and of uniform width in one end portion thereof and relatively wide in another portion, and another part formed integral with said firstnamed part and extending over the wide portion of the opening therein, Said last-named have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of part having the part thereof over the wide September, 1902. portion of said opening stamped into spher- 1021 form and having its free end reduced in 5 Width and projecting into the narrow portion Witnesses:
of said opening, substantially as described. 0. C. ORIPPEN, In testimony that I claim the foregoing I l J. M. BLACK.
FERDINAND KING.
