The reference character 1 indicates the cas-' ing of my improved filter, which is provided with the top or head 2 and the bottom3, each of which may be riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the casing 1.
Across the lower portion of the casing 1, a
short distance above the bottom thereof, extends a diaphragm or partition 4, which is riveted to the inside of the casing 1, as shown. Suitable packing may be provided between the periphery of the diaphragm 4 and the casing, so as to providealiquid-tight joint. 7 The diaphragm 4 is provided with a plurality of apertures, into each of which is screwed or secured a short tube 7, provided at its upper end with a screw-cap 8. Each of the tubes 7 is provided with a series of peripheral slotsor apertures 9, as shown. A pedestal 5 is riveted to the bottom 3 of the casing 1 and supports or braces the central portion of the diaphragm 4. On the upper side of the diaphragm 4 is a bearing-plate 6,which is bolted to the pedestal 5 by screw-bolts,which extend through the diaphragm 4, as shown. A vertical shaft 10 bears at its lower end on the bearing-plate 6 and extends at its upper end and surrounds the shaft 10. Suitable packing may be provided to produce a tight joint between the bushing 11 and the shaft 10. An adjustable stop 12 may be fastened upon the shaft 10 below the bushing 11 to prevent said shaft from being displaced on the bearing-.

Upon its upper end the shaft 10 is provided with a bevel-wheel 13, meshing with a bevel-wheel 14, mounted on a horizontal shaft 15, supported in bearings by an upright 16, connected to the head of the casing 1. The horizontal shaft 15 is provided with a hand-wheel 17, by means of which it may be rotated to operate the shaft 10 through the gearing just described.
-Attached to the lower end of the vertical shaft.10 is a plurality of blades or arms 18,
which'are arranged above the tubes 7 on the diaphragm 4.
The casing 1- may be provided at its upper end with a door or trap 19, through which sand or other filtering material may beintroduced to the casing 1.
Extending into the upper end of the casing 1 through the side wall and terminating in a funnel-shaped mouth 20 is a supply-pipe 21, which is provided with a Waste-pipe 22. A three-way valve 23 is located in the pipe 21v at the point where said pipe is joined by the Waste-pipe 22. Below the waste-pipe 22 is' a pipe 24, which connects with awatermain or other suitable source of supply. A
three-way valve 25 is located in the pipe-21 at the point Where said pipe is'joined by the supply-pipe 24. The supply-pipe 24 is provided with a .regulating-vavle 26. At its lowerend the pipe 21 is provided-with a regulating-valve 27. A pipe 28 connects with the pipe 21 near its lower end, as shown.
This-pipe 28 communicates at one endwith Q the casing 1 of the filter below the diaphragm 4 therein, and at its other end said pipe 28 communicates with a suitable storage-reservoir for receiving the filtered liquid drawn from the casing 1. The pipe 28 is provided'with a three-way valves 23 and 25 the pipe 21 is provided with a branch pipe 30, which leads into the lower end of a chamber 31. The
regulating-valve 29, as shown. Between the IOO chamber 31 is provided for the reception of alum or other suitable material which will act to coagulate,precipitate,or purify any foreign substance which may be contained in the liquid being filtered. A waste-pipe 31', provided with a regulating-valve 32, is connected with the pipe 30, as shown. Leading from the upper end of the chamber 31 and communicating with the pipe 21 is a pipe 33, which is provided with a controlling-valve 34.
The particular form of chamber 31, which I shall term for convenience a coagulatingchamber, is illustrated in Fig. 2 of thedrawings. Thischamberhasascrew-threaded connection at its lower end with the pipe 30, as shown. Extending vertically through the center of the chamber 31 is a tube 35, which is closed atits upperend and connected toabushing 36. The lower end of the tube 35 is provided with a circular series of perforations 37. Extending through the bushing 36 and tube 35 isa tubular valve-stem 38, provided at its upper end with a hand-wheel 39. The lower end of the valve-stem 38 is pointed or coneshaped and cooperates with a cone-shaped valve-seat 40. By means of the valve-stem 38 the passage through the pipe 30 may be controlled, as will be readily understood. Liquid entering by the pipe 30 when the valve-stem 38 is in an elevated position will pass through the perforations 37 of the tube 35 and through the alum or other coagulating or purifying material 41 located in the chamber 31, as shown. By providing the tube 35 surrounding the valve-stem 38 the alum or other coagulating material is effectually prevented from clogging the valve-stem 38 and preventing it from. accurately fitting its seat 40, as would be the case if no tube 35 were provided and if the alum were allowed to pack around the lower end of the valve-stem 38 when said valve-stem was in an elevated position. The coagulant-chamber 31 is provided with a suitable door or opening 42, by means of which the alum or other chemical may be introduced.
The pipe 21 is provided between the three- Way valves 23 and 25 with a branch pipe 43, controlled by a valve 44. The pipe 43 ex tends through a bushing 45 into the casingl of the filter andtconnects at its upper end with the lower portion of a chamber 46, mounted inside the casing 1. At its upper end the chamber 46 is open, so as to permit liquid entering by the pipe 43 to overflow at the upper end of the chamber 46, and so enter the casing 1. The chamber 46 is filled with iron-filings, by means of which the liquid passing therethrough and then through the filtering-bed is efiectually filtered.
If I desire, I may construct the chamber 46 in the same manner as I construct the coagulant-chamber, previously described. In such event it is only necessary to substitute ironfilings for the alum or other chemical contained in the chamber 31.
Upon the diaphragm 4 in the casing 1 of the filter 1 preferably provide a layer of pebbles, which surrounds the tubes 7 of the diaphragm. These pebbles extend, preferably, to the under surface of the arms or blades 18 on the shaft 10. Packed in the casing 1 above the blades 18 and pebbles is a quantity of sand, gravel, or other filtering medium, through which liquid flowing from the fun nel-shaped mouth 20 of the pipe 21 or from the upper end of the chamber 46 passes and by which it is filtered.
Constructed as above described the operation of my improved filter is as follows: Let it be assumed that all the controlling-valves of the apparatus are closed. The valve 26 in the water-supply pipe 24 is opened and the three-way valve 25 is turned, so as to place the pipe 24 in communication with the upper end of the pipe 21. The three-way valve 23 is adjusted so as to close the waste-pipe 22 and to open the passage through the pipe 21. The water to be filtered then enters the easing 1 by the funnel-shaped mouth 20 of the pipe 21 and flows down through the layers of sand and pebbles, being thereby filtered. When the filtered water reaches the diaphragm 4 in the lower portion of the casing, it passes through the slots or apertures 9 in the tubes 7 and enters the lower portion of the casing 1 beneath the diaphragm 4. This lower portion of the casing 1 forms what I shall for convenience term a collectingchamber. From the collecting chamber the filtered water is drawn ofi by opening the valve 29 in the pipe 28, and such filtered Water is then conducted to any suitable storage-reservoir. (Not shown.) When it is desired to coagulate, precipitate, or purify any impurities in the liquid being filtered by treating the impurities with suitable chemicals-such as alum or iron-filings, for eXample-the valve 38 in the coagulatingchamber 31 and the valve 34 in the pipe are opened. Water will then pass through the pipe 30, coagulating-chamber 31, pipe 33, and pipe 21 into the upper portion of the easing 1, as will be readily seen. When it is desired to more efiectually filter the water by passing it through an additional quantity of iron-filings or the like, the valve 44 in the pipe 43 is opened and the water is permitted to pass through the chamber 46, containing iron-filings, and overflow at the upper end of said chamber into the casing 1 to there filter through the additional layers of sand and pebbles. In this way the water is effectually filtered by the time it reaches the collecting-chamber at the bottom of the casing 1. After the filter has been in operation for a time and a quantity of alum from the coagulant-chamber 31 has been fed to the filtering material in the casing 1 the valve 38 in the coagulant-chamber may be closed and the three-way valve in the pipe 21 may be adjusted to prevent the passage of water through IIO - as to open communication between the pipe 28, leading to the storage-reservoir and the upper end of the pipe 21, and the three-way valve 23 in the upper end of the pipe 21 is adjusted so as to open communication between the upper end of the pipe 21 and the Waste-pipe 22 and close communication between the upper and lower ends of the pipe 21. The valve 29 in the pipe leading to the storage-reservoir is then opened, and the filtered liquid contained in said reservoir is permitted to back down the pipe 28 into the collecting-chamber at the bottom of the casing 1, through the perforated tubes in the dia-- phragm 4, up through the filtering medium in the casing 1, through the funnel shaped mouth-20 of the pipe 21, through the pipe 21, and out of the apparatus by the wastepipe 22. A quantity of the filtered water also passes up the pipe 21 to pipe 43, through the iron-filings in the chamber 46, out of the chamber 46,through the f unnel-shaped mouth 20 of pipe 21, and through the pipe 21 to the waste-pipe 22, as described. A still further quantity of filtered water may be permitted to pass up the pipe 21, through pipe30,through coagulant-chamber 31, through pipe 33, and through pipe 21 to waste-pipe 22. When the apparatus is being cleaned by passing filtered water up through the casing 1, the arms 18 on the shaft 10 are rotated by means of the hand-wheel 17, so as to agitate the filtering material contained in the casing 1, and thus permit thorough cleaning thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a filter, the combination of a casing, filteringmaterial in said casing, means for agitating said filtering inateriaha chamber in said casing, located away from the axial center thereof, the upper end of said chamber being open, a supply-pipe leading into the upper end of said casing, and a communication between said supply-pipe and the chamber in said casing.
2. In a filter, the combination of a casing, filtering-material in said casing, a rotatable shaft, radial arms on said shaft, a chamber in said casing above the radial arms on said shaft, said chamber being located away from the axial center of said casing and the upper end thereof being open, a coagulant-chamber, a communication between said coagulant-chamber and said casing, a supply-pipe leading into the upper end of said casing, a communication between-said supply-pipe and the chamber in said casing, and a communication between said supply-pipe and said coagulant-chamber.
3. In a filter, the combination of a casing, filtering material in said casing, a rotatable shaft in said casing, radial arms on said shaft, a chamber in said casing located above the radial arms on said shaft, said chamber being disposed away from the axial center of said casing and the upper end thereof being open,
a coagulant-chamber, a communication between said coagulant-chamber and said casing, a supply-pipe leading into the upper end of said casing, a branch pipe connecting said supply-pipe and said chamber, a valve controlling said branch pipe, a second branch pipe connecting said supply-pipe and said coagulant-chamber, and a valve for control ling said second branch pipe.

means for preventing clogging of said valve, a communication between said coagulantchamber and said casing, a branch pipe, located between the two three-way valves in said supply-pipe, leading into said coagulantchamber, a second branch pipe, located between the two three-way valves in said supply-pipe, leading into the-filtering-chamber in said casing, a valve controllingsaid second branch pipe, an exhaust-pipe connected with the collecting-chamber in said casing, a con-' nection'bet'ween saidexhaust-pipe and said supply-pipe and a valve in said exhaust-pipe.

In a filter, the combination of a casing, filtering material therein, means for agitating the material, a chamber in the casing eccentrically disposed with relation to the axial center thereof, a supply-pipe leading into the upper end of the casing, and a communication between the'supply-pipe and the said chamber. j
